Lookin’ Back: Seo Taiji Big in Japan?

Today on a very special Lookin’ Back, we take a look at Seo Taiji and Boys’ first (and possibly only) major american exposure.

And to think it was all a big accident.

I can clearly remember seeing this movie (3 ninjas kick back) as a child in the theater and coming to this point in the movie and hearing Seo Taiji blast over the speakers and thinking… HUH!?

In case you didn’t catch it, the kids are supposed to be in Japan and Seo Taiji is the god-father of KPOP. Someone on the production team definately dropped the ball on this one. Oh well, we all look, act, think alike right?

Chumps. At least it’s good for some laughs for those of us that noticed.

FM Needs Your Support!

FM

The Far East Movement, a hip-hop trio out of SoCal and another group on The List, has been making big moves the past couple of years including securing spots on soundtracks to TV shows and Movies like CSI and F&F: Tokyo Drift as well as getting substantial airplay from radio stations across the nation.

This trend continues as they look to get a permanent spot on the radio playlist at Blazin 98.9 in San Diego. The station is running a promotion where if an artist or group earns 50%+ “Love it” votes for 5 nights on a row, their record will continue to spin.

FM has won 3 nights in a row, two more to go and they need your support!

Details on how YOU can help after the jump.

Hyori Contradicts Herself

So the big KPOP story making the rounds on the blogosphere the past day or so has been the leaking of Hyori’s promotional material for her upcoming album. Big deal, people get to see a quick 30 second advert and some promotional photos before her management intended them too.

The material is nothing new for hyori and continues to glorify her sex-symbol status in Korea however I had two overbearing thoughts after the whole ordeal. (Thoughts and photos after the break)

Lookin’ Back: 1999 – DaeHanMinGuk (대한민국) MCMXCIX

Anyone who is a fan of K-HipHop should know about this album. It was the highly influental debut of a series that would launch hip-hop as a legitimate genre/culture in Korea for the first time. As the culture and music rose to the forefront of the public eye, the DaeHanMinGuk series of hip-hop compilation albums launched and showcased many acts still in the industry today.

Introducing: The List

So here is a formal introduction to one of the sections of this blog: The List

It is an informal compilation of Asian-American artists that I personally dig and recommend. Some are other artists I have worked with, some are artists I know and talk with, and most are simply ones I have come across and really felt their music. It’s Yellow People Music at it’s finest haha.

I’ll have spotlight articles on some of them in the near future. My apologies for the slow pace of updates thus far.

It’s broken down by category and listed alphabetically. Right now the Hip-Hop section far outweighs the other sections but hopefully that will change.

Let me know what you guys think!

Brown Eyes Set to Return!

Source: http://www.popseoul.com/2008/06/09/brown-eyes-is-back/

So I thought I’d kick off the first post (besides the intro) with some very exciting news. Brown Eyes, a k-pop staple of the early 2000′s is set to return June 19th after disbanding 5 years ago. Although they only released two albums before going their seperate ways (due to disagreement with management), their debut single (벌써 1년 [Already One Year]) became an instant classic in the k-pop world.

Catch their questionably laughable promotional ad after the break!

Hello world!

Welcome to the grand opening of aTunes!

The purpose and ultimate scope of this site is still a little open however I do at least have a loose theme to hold it all together. In case you havent guessed already, aTunes is a contrived play off of iTunes. The ‘a’ stands for Asian. That’s right, Yellow People Music (or YPM for short). Yes, trite, I know but oh well you can shut your face =).

Although there are a ton of websites and blogs that show case all of the korean, japanese, chinese, whatever-else-nese music out there, there is none that I know of that also incorporates the growing number of asian-american artists here in the states. The closest site that comes to mind is AznRaps but even that is limited by genre. Being an asian “artist” myself (insert shameless plug: www.GiftedThought.com) I take huge interest in the Yellow People Music haha.

This site in no way intends to be a one-stop-shop for all asian music news, showcases, media, etc. That would be simply impossible for me to attempt to cover. Instead aTunes will simply highlight anything and everything I find noteworthy. It’s editorial control at it’s best. We’ll see how this goes.

Anyways, without further ado I invite you to enjoy, spread the word, and support the music.

P.S. A lot of the above will be reiterated in the About section.
