Erika David Botches ‘God Bless America’

R&B singer Erika David had the opportunity to perform ‘God Bless America’ during the 7th inning stretch recently… and unfortunately it did not go very well.

Now there’s a right way to sing at a dodger game, buuuut… that wasn’t it.

If you visit her youtube channel it’s clear that she’s better than this, it’s a shame she had such a public off night. But I guess in a world of youtube and cell phone cameras, no mistake goes unpublished.

Chin up Erika, practice makes perfect.

Shin-b interview w/ SRC

Shin-b really seems to be making the interview rounds lately. Check her latest feature with S Radio Club.

Here’s an excerpt:

SRC: What are your future plans?Shin-B: Aside from the upcoming mixtape and full length album,   I hope to do more international tours and work on expansion.    I want to collaborate with more artists outside of the hip hop and urban realm.    I’m all about having that crossover sound.    I want to incorporate different genres and fuse them into one distinct sound.    Eventually,   I’ll start my own label and help those who were once in my shoes. I want to be able to bring more of a female presence to a largely male dominated world.

Be sure to get the rest over at SRC.

Jimmy Boi – I Got It MV

Check the new Jimmy Boi MV for the single ‘I Got It’ featuring Booman & Parlae from Dem Franchize Boyz. Shot on location in the ATL.

I was feeling some of his older material a lot more than this but I’m not a huge fan of this style of song to begin with.

WTF: Urban Azn Presents War For Respect

Wow, time flies… it’s another Weekly Thursday Freebie (It’s already the 18th one!).

But all the credit for this one goes to the good fellas over at Urban Azn. They are the ones that compiled this hip-hop mixtape together for your listening pleasure.

A compilation album of the most prominent Asian rappers in hip hop, War For Respect focuses on the street life that many of us are dealing with today. The album is free for download and promotional uses, hit the jump for details on the album.

The mixtape features Jin, Decipher, Mondega, Shogunna, Rookadamus, Flowsik, Reign Era, Roscoe Umali, Thai, Chan, LS, Yung Mac, & Chuckie Akenz. Some of the songs are pretty dated but the project gives a fair representation on the numerous street singles by Asian-American/Candian Hip-Hop artists over the past few years. The cover art borders between a stylized cool and excessive to the point of cheesy but that doesn’t detract from the fact it’s a pretty good collection of tracks.

You can find the back cover w/ the tracklisting and link for DL after the jump!

Blue Scholars featured in Seattle Times

Hip-Hop duo Blue Scholars were featured today in a short article of The Seattle Times Online. Music writer Andrew Matson gives a quick commentary on his thoughts on their OOF! EP.

Matson states:

Local hiphop group Blue Scholars is about to release an EP called “OOF!” Tuesday, and it’s the best thing the group’s done by far.

Sabzi, the half of Blue Scholars in charge of what I call beats — and he calls “tunes” and “riddims” — made one composition on “OOF!” that I like more than all the others. It’s a barely-there track. Just drums and synths. Here’s the instrumental, called “Ahi.”

I interviewed the Scholars yesterday, and will post transcriptions later today and tomorrow.

When asked where he got the tribal-sounding drums for “Ahi,” Sabzi gave me an answer that didn’t mean anything. He wouldn’t tell me. But last week, talking to the group’s manager Dave Meinert, I remember hearing something about taiko drums. Strikes me as a very original sampling idea.

Stay tuned for the interviews, and also for my review of “OOF!” in advance of its Tuesday release.

Passion releases ‘As Long As You Wait For Me’

Passion has released a new video performance of an original song entitled ‘As Long As You Wait For Me’. It’s a sweet song about perservering through a long distance relationship. Catch his explanation after the video below.

An original short song I wrote in Sydney, Australia back in July 2008. This is dedicated to all of you out there that are in a long-distance relationship. I know it may get really hard and tough and sometimes you might not find enough strength, patience, or faith to keep it going. But when you find somebody in your life worth waiting for, worth fighting for, you’ll do everything you can TOGETHER, to make it work. I love you Claire.

Kina Grannis covers Colbie Caillat

It’s impossible to stay on top of every artists new youtube up dates but Colbie is one of my favorite acoustic artists and Kina does her justice with a great cover of ‘Fallin For You’. They both have that great combination of a slightly raspy tone with a sweet voice. I’m diggin this one =).

Big Phony releases ‘But I Will, Everyday’

Big Phony has just released a new live performance video for the single ‘But I Will, Everday’. It’s a very sweet, earnest song dedicated “to his wife… whom he hasn’t met yet”. You can find it later this fall off his upcoming album ‘Kicking Punching Bags’. I’m really feeling this simple, laid back, guerilla style music videos.
