Just ‘Cause: Random Kid Covers Jason Mraz

OK so I’m sure many of you have seen this by now. It’s been hugely possible the last couple days. But in case you haven’t, prepare yourself for an “aww” moment… unless you’re truly too gangsta to appreciate it.

This kid has more female admirers at the age of… like 3 or however old he is than I do… or will… ever have.. sigh.

Wonder Girls x SYTYCD Performance

OK, as reported last week, the Wonder Girls are continuing their quest for world domination and have appeared on tonights episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Of course the performance has already been ripped and uploaded to youtube by the fine folks around the internet and as of 10:30PM EST, the video is still available for viewing.

I’m sure this video won’t last too long once the media police make their rounds but no worries, a-Tunes will find a way to keep it available. Just expect some down time  now and then.

Anyways, how was the performance? I’d summarize it as exciting yet incredibly underwhelming at the same time. On one side, this is a HUGE step for any Asian performer, to take the stage prime time on a nationally televised TV Show. On the other hand I’m fairly certain the whole thing was lipsynced and they didn’t exactly draw a tremendous response from the crowd. It was a warm reception, but only mildly so. Let’s hope the performance sparked some interest and maybe we’ll see ‘Nobody’ get a lot of downloads from iTunes over the next few days.

What’d you guys think?

Showdown: Jessica Sanchez vs Ashley Robles

For this edition of Showdown we got two r&b heavyweight divas ambitiously covering Alicia Keys and her contribution to Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State of Mind’. Some of you may know Jessica Sanchez as a young singer who has proven that she’s got a voice well beyond her age. In the other corner we have Ashley Robles, a veteran vocalist working to make a name for herself. So who came out on top in this showdown? You decide!

Jessica Sanchez

Ashley Robles

In my opinion, neither could quite compare with the exceptional Alica, but overall I think Ashley’s experience gave her a little more polish and control. While it’s clear Jessica has some pipes, her vocal felt a little too forced for me. Agree? Disagree? Tell us with your votes!

Dawen Interview w/ Hypen Magazine

Hypen Magazine has a new interview up with singer/song writer Dawen. The author gets to pick Dawen’s brain on his upbringing, his influences, and what it means to be Asian American. A pretty decent read and one that any Dawen fan should check out.

Here’s an interesting quote:

How do you see yourself in relation to the community of Asian American artists?

In terms of Asian American music, since moving to L.A. I’ve been really exposed to how diverse it is. I have to say that any chance I can, I really celebrate the fact that the music being made by Asian Americans is as diverse as that umbrella term implies. One thing that people kind of criticize as well is that Asian American music doesn’t have a very distinct sound. I choose to think of that as a blessing. You can have pop that is Asian American, you could have R&B that is Asian American.

There’s a huge movement before me, and that has really enabled me to be where I am today.

If you’re too lazy to hit the link for the rest you can read the interview in it’s entirety after the jump!
