Johnnyphlo Shares and Translates 내 안에 있으니 [03.03.09]

For those of you who’ve picked up a copy of Basic Strategy, Johnnyphlo’s debut full length album, you may have heard the song 내 안에 있으니 [03.03.09] produced by Sam Ock. If you understand Korean, you should already have a pretty good idea what the track’s about. If you haven’t had the opportunity to pick up the album and/or you don’t understand Korean then you may be interested in hearing the story behind the track.

In a short but poignant blog post Johnnyphlo wrote the following:

Exactly a year ago (March 2, 2009 in America, March 3, 2009 in Korea), I lost my best friend.

Miss you, dad.

This song is the narrative of his father’s passing and how he’s dealt with the loss of family. He’s provided the English translation in the following video. This is one of my favorite tracks from his album, certainly not because of the subject matter but because it’s so bone chilling real and honest. It’s hard to know exactly what Johnnyphlo went through but this track gives you a glimpse.

RIP to his father and much love and respect to JP and his family.

Surrilla Releases Promo Video for ‘Mad World’ Single

Surrilla’s got a new video promoting his track ‘Mad World’ and the free mixtape it’s on, Simon Says Vol. 1. The video is really just a collection of related images set to the music but it keeps the eeriness of the song in tact. I’m sure most of you recognize the sample, Gary Jule’s rendition of the Tears for Fears song of the same name. It’s a simple but effective flip that makes for a good instrumental. Surrilla’s style takes some getting used to but pay attention cause the dude’s got some interesting things to say on the track.

Kato Interviewed by Kevin Nottingham

Kevin Nottingham has got a new interview with Atlanta based producer/MC Kato. It’s another quick one but if you ever wondered how Kato ended up in ATL, what’s in his secret music equipment locker, or what collaborations are on deck then this is the read for you.

Here’s a little glimpse for you:

Why the name Kato?

Growing up, I was heavily influenced by Bruce Lee. He was the coolest man I’d ever seen so I stole his name from the role he portrayed in the 60’s ‘Green Hornet’ TV series, Kato. I still have a giant poster of him hanging in my studio and bedroom.

You can check out the rest over at KN or after the break!

Ashley Robles Releases ‘Get Dippy (Let Ya Hair Down)’

Proving that some people still use their Myspace accounts, R&B singer Ashley Robles has got a new single out called ‘Get Dippy (Let Ya Hair Down)’ up on her page. It’s a beat heavy club number and though it’s great to hear new material from her I have to be quite frank and say I have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand the verses are fun and simple and she sounds great on them, but the hook gets too busy and everything clashes, at least to my ears. It’s too bad for the imbalance because I thought the track had more promise plus Ashley has an awesome voice. Maybe I just don’t get this type of song but I was a tad underwhelmed.

You can check out ‘Get Dippy’ on her Myspace page.

Alfa Garcia x Mike Isberto Featured on Kababayan LA

From what I can tell, Kababayan LA is a local Filipino-centric cable network in Los Angeles and they had a super short interview/feature on Alfa Garcia and Mike Isberto. They really only had the chance to talk about their upcoming performances but it was still awesome to see the additional exposure for the two artists. At the end they show a clip of Mike Isberto performing a snippet of a song. It’s all a bit rushed but still a welcome sight.

Geologic aka Prometheus Brown Interviewed by Dumbfoundead

Dumb continues his interview series of Hip-Hop’s best and chopped it up with Geo aka Prometheus Brown of Blue Scholars. He discusses the formation of Blue Scholars with producer Sabzi and how he used to be involved in the battle scene. He announces a new Scholars album this fall, it’ll be their first full length in 3 years! So be on the look out for that. Nice, short interview.

J. Reyez Drops New Single – “I Won’t Stop” ft Gamble & Hang

J. Reyez has got a new single out called “I Won’t Stop” featuring Gamble and Hang. The beat is a bit generic but it’s got a dark menacing sound that gives it some bite. J and Gamble deliver pretty strong verses but Hang was the weakest link. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t up too bar with this track-mates. It didn’t help that his mic quality was way off too. Regardless I think it’s a pretty decent track. It seems like J. Reyez is improving.

Bambu x Prometheus Brown Release ‘Slow Down’ MV

We told you it was coming, and now the video for the single ‘Slow Down’ by Bambu featuring Prometheus Brown has finally dropped.

Since I’m at work right now I’ve only been able to briefly check it out but woooh, that’s some nice quality video. I’ll post my thoughts later tonight.

[edit] So I peeped the video and I gotta say this joint is hot! Great cuts, great edits, and a crazy blend of martial arts, swag, people wild’n out and a raw, hot track make for an entertaining video that’s way above ho’s and ice. [/edit]
