Illmind to Release Instrumental Album – Behind the Curtain – in April

Want to hear some Illmind beats and instrumentation? If you wait a month you’ll be able to peep some of his work without any pesky MC’s and vocalists covering the track with the release of Behind the Curtain, an instrumental album due April 29th. This will give everyone an opportunity to hear what he does best, before a rapper has the chance to influence the creative direction. It should be a hot release and I can’t wait to hear what’s on it. Will he explore and expand the genre ala RJD2? Or will it be a more conventional collection of rap beats. Looking forward to finding out!

Melissa Polinar Compels You to “Take It Easy”

I can’t front. I’m a huge Melissa Polinar fan. Every time she drops new material I can’t wait to hear it. Her latest song is a good example of why that’s so. The track is called “Take It Easy” and is a piece she apparently started a couple years ago but just finished the other day. Sometimes you gotta let things marinate for a while. I hope she goes into the studio and lays this down proper because it has a great blueprint. And is it just me or can anyone else hear a Jesse Barrera like influence in her writing and melodies? It’s a good thing. You can buy the song for a buck via the widget below.

I literally finished this song tonight. I’ve had this melodic idea (verse/chorus) since August 2009 (said so according to Garageband). I guess I really do let things/ideas simmer, huh? Anyways, about the song… lyrically, they’re all my thoughts when I can’t sleep at night. It’s not a love song necessarily but my conversation with my dreams and where I want to be.

cLAsicc Spits a “sParking Lot” Verse

cLAsicc is an artist who’s been around for a while, but has managed to stay under the radar as of late. But it looks like he’s starting to put more material out, dropping this video of a verse he calls “sParking Lot”. It exhibits his smooth, laid back California flow and is an ode to one of his favorite recreational activities. Clean video, decent verse, not so into the subject matter but hopefully a sign that he’ll continue to drop projects.

Jason Chen x Janice Yan Cover “Hate That I Love You”

This track was one of my favorites from a few years back, so I was a little hesitant to listen to this cover since I was afraid they may not do it justice. Luckily they did a stand up job. Both Janice and Jason have great pop voices and have good music/video chemistry so it all worked out pretty well. I thought this was a pretty impressive cover video. I can dig it, just wish the track was available for DL too.

JRA x Victor Kim x Chester See – “The Lazy Song” (Bruno Mars Cover)

Who’s feeling lazy today cause JR Aquino, Victor Kim, and Chester See are feeling “Lazy.” Actually their more in a singing mood then being lazy.  This song has a great melody to it and they kept it that way.  Also everyone had exceptional vocals, this is my first time hearing Chester sing and he did quite well from my point of view.  Being in one location is very risky to shoot a “MV” but they got really creative with their environment.  If you watch the whole video, you’ll be able to see different versions of the cover which is something new, at least for me.  KevJumba shot and edited the video, nice work by him.

Critic’s Corner: Decipher – The Effect

It’s been years since we’ve seen a full-length LP from Philadelphia rapper Decipher. Sure, we’ve seen a couple mixtapes from him along with a plethora of feature spots on other artists’ songs but those aren’t enough to truly gauge how an artist has evolved over time compared to an actual, conceptualized album. But this changed at the top of 2011, when Decipher dropped his long awaited return, The Effect. The MUzO artist did a good job of building anticipation for the album, but does it live up to the hype? We’re gonna find out.
