Two Cents: 5 Reasons Why Youtube Is Hurting Our Artists

Before we begin allow me to make one thing clear. Youtube, in itself, is not bad. In fact it’s one of the greatest tools that musicians have come across since Myspace first launched. Heck, Youtube, and it’s corporate extension Vevo, has become the new mTV in a day and age when most teens couldn’t tell you what TRL stood for. The Youtube community is humongous and it allows artists to interact visually with their fans in an instant and unprecedented way. That being said, the phenomenon and age of the Youtube star isn’t without it’s share of downsides. Here are my top 5 reasons why Youtube is hurting our artists.

Peter Hong, perhaps better known as instrumentalist/musician/entrepreneur Peter Rocks, got some spotlight of his own with an interview on BPMnet hosted by PK and Jazmin‘s Felicia Khong. Another day, another endless batch of Youtube covers and remixes. Today’s theme is Top 40 Rap which of course includes remixes of the biggest names of late including Fab, Bad Meets Evil, Drake, Jay, Kanye and more. There are a few surprises in store including crooner Paul Kim showing his versatility by opting to spit a few bars, a conceptual remix by Triangle Offense and their ode to the Dark Knight, possibly the hungriest verses I’ve heard yet from the OnFire Ent crew, and that’s just to name a few. Check em all out below.

Flu Reaches the “Finish Line”

It’s the top of a new week and you know what that means… it’s a new drop from Flu‘s 8 week Asphalt & Aerosol promotional campaign. This week’s joint is called Finish Line and is a high energy track that suits Flu well. I wouldn’t say this is the strongest song we’ve heard from him thus far from the project but it’s another fair addition to the playlist. Like what you hear? Well if you’ve been keeping up you probably already know it’s a free DL.

454′s Thai Goes International with Feature on J.Lee’s “Khep Lai (Drifting Away)” [Preview]

Thai has a new feature coming up on Vietnamese singer J.Lee’s single & MV “Khep Lai (Drifting Away)”. It looks to be an R&B tune with some guest rap vocals from Thai and the MV will be debuting on 454′s newly minted international Youtube channel. Look for the MV to drop on that channel in the near future. Props to the crew for keeping their aspirations global and not just limited to their California home base.
