Last year, Jihae released the album Fire Burning Rain and as part of the promotions, put together a musical theater production to accompany the LP. The show is about to have another debut in a couple weeks at the Highline Ballroom in NY City on September 8th. The multi-media Rock Opera is a full scale theatrical showcase that tackles an abstract story. You can find more information and promotional videos after the break. Just a heads up, some of the clips below are NSFW.
This clip ain’t brand new but it’s still worth sharing. I’m sure most West Coast/Bay area Hip-Hop fans should be able to appreciate this one! E-40, one of the veterans and staples of NorCal Hip-Hop is a one of a kind carried by his unique flow, charisma, and vocabulary. But this Asian guy may be giving him a run for his money, performing a fairly spot-on impression of the MC, mannerisms and all. It’s an entertaining watch to say the least!
At the end of this past Spring, Rocky Rivera dropped a project called the Pop Killer mixtape including the song “SF Retrospect” featuring Davinci; an ode to her home stomping grounds of the Bay. It never got pushed as a single but it’s been given the official remix treatment courtesy of Digital Martyrs, retaining the nostalgic feel of the original but still managing to switch up the sound. It’s a freebie so click here to listen for yourself.
This is the last week of Adam WarRock’s Donation Drive Month campaign and he’s brought out some tracks from his older catalog to refresh and present to many for the first time. “Smashed Gordon” is the first cut with “PBR” on the flip side of this double single. AW is getting ready to go on a big tour soon so be sure to catch a show if he’s swinging by your area. You can find the liner notes for the song after the break. If you’d like to DL the songs for free, head on over to his website for the link.
It’s been a good day, so what would you folks say to another edition of Showdown? This is where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.
Canadian rapper Drake has always been a popular pick for covers and remixes in Youtube-land and his song “Headlines” is no exception. We’ve seen countless renditions all over the internet but two of the more recent ones to cross our screens were by DMV’s J. Han (of AMP fame) and AZ’s City Boy. The two MCs went in different directions content wise so it made for an interesting contrast over the same instrumental.
It was kind of interesting to see both artists start slow and kick it into double time in the latter half, but overall I’d say their demeanor and styles are nuanced on separate ends of the spectrum. I guess the only question is which one fits your liking better? J. Han’s college-kid, more light-hearted charm? Or is it City Boy’s more menacing and tenacious energy?
