Showdown: Megan Lee x Gerald Ko vs Vincent Lacsamana

23 Aug

In a little bout of East vs West we have a Showdown of covers by veteran Youtubers Megan Lee & Gerald Ko against a bit of a new comer from the East – Vincent Lacsamana. The song in contention is “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars off his It’s Better If You Don’t Understand EP. Both covers made use of the acoustic guitar and are somewhat similar in style but definitely different in flavor. So whose rendition did you prefer? Megan & Gerald’s sweet, gentle charm or Vincent’s solo pop/r&b charisma? Vote!

Showdown: JVoqalz vs Mike Isberto vs Jayne Rio x Summerbreeze

29 Jul

It’s been a couple months since the last time we featured a Showdown but today felt like the perfect opportunity to pick the series back up because 3 covers of the same track were uploaded all within a day of each other… and I’m certain this is just the beginning. If you’ve been keeping up with us, you may recall we posted about a fresh new track by the very talented Bruno Mars entitled “Just the Way You Are”. Turns out we definitely weren’t the only ones to love the track. Check out these renditions from JVoqalz, Mike Isberto, and Jayne Rio x Summerbreeze. It seems like its a requirement for these Californian Filipino artists to pick up the guitar and cover this track!

JVoqalz

Mike Isberto

Jayne Rio x Summerbreeze

I’m being 100% honest when I say it’s hard for me to pick favorite out of these three. Each cover had it’s own unique spin and qualities to it. JVoqalz put some acoustic R&B flavor on it, Mike slowed it down and made it more intimate while Jayne & Summer had the benefit of great harmonies and instrumentation. How about you?

Showdown: Baiyu vs Erika David vs Esna Yoon

29 May

Alicia Key’s most recent album has produced a number of hits, most recently being the single ‘Unbreakable’. It’s a great R&B single and of course that means it’s going to be heavily covered. For this episode of Showdown we have three very talented ladies in the form of Baiyu, Erika David, and Esna Yoon. There’s no doubt that each singer can definitely hold their own while each of them brings their own flavor to the mix.

Baiyu

Erika David

Esna Yoon

So which cover did you prefer? Baiyu’s sultry voice? Erika’s crisp R&B/Pop singing? or Esna Yoon’s soulful piano flip? Vote below!

Showdown: Joseph Vincent vs JRA

21 Apr

Both of these artists decided to cover the new Travis McCoy track ft Bruno Mars – ‘Billionaire’. They both san it in a similar style and both decided to switch up the lyrics a little bit and put their own spin on it. On top of that, they posted up these videos within a 24 hour span of one another… so this seemed like a prime candidate for a new episode of Showdown! Nothing like a little friendly competition.

In one corner we have Joseph Vincent, a youtube siger who has a decent following that’s steadily growing.

In the other corner we have the arguably better known JRA, who just dropped a new album and tends to collab with a lot of different artists over the internet.

So who do you think came out smelling like a billion bucks? Vote away!

Showdown: Esna Yoon vs Clara Chung

23 Mar

Welcome a-Tunes readers. It’s time for another showdown and this time it’s match up of Southern Californian female Korean-American artists Esna Yoon and Clara Chung. They each do their own unique/quirky spin on the Lady Gaga mega hit ‘Bad Romance’. Each rendition/video has it’s own charm but the question here is which one did you like better? Check them both out below.

Esna Yoon

Clara Chung

Honestly I think this is tough one! I like both versions a lot because neither was boring or played out. Both of these girls are so talented but regardless, vote away!

Showdown: David Choi vs Kollaboration 10 vs Kris Mark x Krystle Tugadi vs Joseph Vincent

1 Mar

It’s been a while since our last Showdown, and after seeing a new cover of the new(ish) Train song ‘Hey Soul Sister’ I thought it’d be fitting to round up some of the covers and do a fun little comparison. This time we got another fairly big group with David Choi, the Kollaboration 10 Competitors (Will Volume, Paul Jisung Kim, Mike Isberto, Clara Chung, Jason Yang, Sam Hart & Alfa Garcia), Kris Mark & Krystle Tugadi, and Joseph Vincent all putting their own spin on the fun little single.

So which version is your favorite?

David Choi with his crazy layers?

The Kollaboration 10 Crew with the massive ensemble?

Kris Mark & Krystle Tugadi’s acoustic R&B twist?

or Joseph Vincent with his simple but breezy interpretation?

Each version brought a pretty unique style to the table so I suppose it’s all a matter of taste but regardless, vote for your favorite(s)!

Showdown: JR Aquino x AJ Rafael x Andrew Garcia vs David Choi vs Mike Isberto vs Legaci vs Victor Kim vs Olivia Thai x Jason Chen vs BLYSS

5 Jan

So IYAZ’s “Replay” seems to be one of the most covered songs recently. I can’t blame em, it’s a catchy fresh song and isn’t too difficult to flip. So this edition of Showdown we have a very special line up that’s shaping up to be a battle royale. Without further ado let’s bring on the main event.

JR Aquino x AJ Rafael x Andrew Garcia

David Choi

Mike Isberto

Legaci x Summerbreeze

Victor Kim

Olivia Thai x Jason Chen

BLYSS (3 out of 4)

With so many choices it may be hard to choose a favorite but my vote goes to Legaci x Summerbreeze. They were just too smooth. What about YOU!?

Showdown: Jessica Sanchez vs Ashley Robles

9 Dec

For this edition of Showdown we got two r&b heavyweight divas ambitiously covering Alicia Keys and her contribution to Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State of Mind’. Some of you may know Jessica Sanchez as a young singer who has proven that she’s got a voice well beyond her age. In the other corner we have Ashley Robles, a veteran vocalist working to make a name for herself. So who came out on top in this showdown? You decide!

Jessica Sanchez

Ashley Robles

In my opinion, neither could quite compare with the exceptional Alica, but overall I think Ashley’s experience gave her a little more polish and control. While it’s clear Jessica has some pipes, her vocal felt a little too forced for me. Agree? Disagree? Tell us with your votes!

Showdown: Lydia Paek vs Kris Mark x Kinh Nguyen x CP Phan x Matt Clores

15 Nov

So there’s an obscure song called ‘Heartbreak’ by a little known artist named Kanye. I don’t know if any of you may have heard it since it was only played… on every radio station every minute of the day for like a year but anyways for this episode of Showdown we have Lydia Paek (of Quest/Boxcuttuhz fame) in one corner and Kris Mark, Kinh Nguyen, CP Phan, & Matt Clores in the other.

Lydia Paek

Kris Mark x Kinh Nguyen x CP Phan x Matt Clores

So who do you think flipped the song better?

*Just a note, Lydia talks for a few minutes before the clip starts but I set it to start when she sings. Feel free to listen to what she had to say by moving the cursor back to the start.

Showdown: Marie Digby vs Rin on the Rox

16 Oct

Showdown time! So both of these videos were posted months back but I recently came across them again and thought they make an intriguing match up. This time around the artists are covering Ne-yo’s “Part of the List”; a great r&b song from his album last year. Let’s check out each act’s rendition:

Marie Digby

Rin on the Rox

So who did you like more? On one hand Marie’s stripped down rendition was beautiful and moving while Rin on the Rox stayed more faithful to the original but brought some incredible harmonies. I dunno about this one folks, I’m on the fence here. If you can choose, cast your vote below!
