Showdown: Jason Chen vs Rooftop Pursuit vs Meg & Dia vs Sam Tsui vs Cilla Chan vs Paul Kim vs New Heights

It’s been nearly a month since our last Showdown, and since everyone and their mother seems to have taken a liking to Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away”, we thought it’d be an opportune time to have our first match-up of the year. This one is a stacked battle card with seven contenders vying for your vote for best cover. There are several repeat Showdown artists here along with a few new faces voices. Production values are all over the place, ranging from laptop webcams to full out MVs… but what matters most is your vote for who you think had the best cover. Check em out below.

Jason Chen

Phil Good of Rooftop Pursuit

Meg & Dia

Sam Tsui

Cilla Chan

Paul Kim

New Heights

Now that you’ve heard and seen them all, who do you think deserves top honors? The ever-present Jason Chen? How about lead singer of Rooftop Pursuit, Phil Good? Perhaps the sisterly team of Meg & Dia Frampton won you over? Sam Tsui always seems to be a fan favorite. However, Cilla Chan continues to show a vocal prowess beyond her college age. Paul Kim always finds a way to inject some R&B flavor into any song. Or has New Heights forever earned your fanfare?

Showdown: New Heights vs Megan Lee vs Victor Kim x Andy Lange

Welcome to another episode of Showdown, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

We were kind of surprised ourselves when we realized that we’ve never had a showdown for the song “Someone Like You” by Adele. A lot of artists have already covered the song, but we still had a few more to share so rather then bunching them up in a round-up – we decided to do a quick little Showdown feature. Some members of the band New Heights are going up against young Megan Lee and a tag team of Victor Kim and Andy Lange. Theres something to appreciate from all the covers but the question is; which one did you enjoy the most?

Did New Heights tug at your heart strings? Or maybe Megan Lee’s beyond-her-age vocals gave you goosebumps? How about the dynamic team of Victor & Andy? Put in your vote for your favorite so the winner can sleep just a little bit more soundly knowing they’ve won an informal competition that doesn’t really matter all that much. It’s all in good fun though!

Showdown: Erika David vs Tommy C vs August Rigo

Welcome to another episode of Showdown, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

Today brings us a battle of Pop/R&B sings taking on the seemingly infallible Usher. Erika David, Tommy C of IBU, and August Rigo each tackle the current Top 40 hit by David Guetta and Usher, “Without You”. Each artist chose to do something slightly different with their clips with Erika taking the conventional sing with the mic route, Tommy C taking the opportunity to thank his fans, and August recreating the instrumental to give it a small twist.

Now that you’ve heard them all, you know what to do! Vote for your favorite, and they can go to Disneyland! Not on our dime… just saying you should vote for them and if they happen to go to Disneyland on their own prerogative, awesome! Cast your vote now.

Showdown: On Fire Ent x Rocky Sandoval vs Hopie Spitshard vs Lyricks x Decipher x The Yellow Boyz x JL x Excel Cruz x Koreone x Manifest x Smokes

Welcome to another episode of Showdown, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

With Drake being undoubtedly one of the hottest acts in the business right now, it’s no wonder why his music has been covered and remixed by artists thousands of times over. For this installment of our Showdown series we’ve decided to highlight a few recent remixes of Drake’s song “The Motto” featuring Lil Wayne. This one is a three way battle with On Fire & Rocky in one corner, Hopie repping the fairer sex on her own in another, and a huge mega roster of artists in the last corner – comprised of Lyricks, De, The Yellow Boyz, Excel Cruz, Koreone, Manifest & Smokes. So by all means, go ahead and take a listen to the three renditions and vote for your favorite below!

On Fire Ent x Rocky Sandoval

Hopie Spitshard

Lyricks, Decipher, Al P, JL, Excel Cruz, Koreone, PassDa, Joel, Manifest, Smokes

So who do you think did the track the must justice? The one two punch of On Fire & Rocky? Hopie rocking the mic via webcam? Or the gigantic 10-man lineup from this years’ Asian Hip-Hop Summit tour? Cast your vote now! Why? … Bragging rights? We really don’t have an answer except to say it’s fun!

Showdown: Joseph Vincent vs AJ Rafael x Tori Kelly vs Jason Chen

Welcome to Showdown, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

If you haven’t heard of Justin Bieber yet… some would say you’re deprived while others would argue you are lucky. But we’re not here to cast a vote for either opinion, no in fact we’re not voting at all… you are! “Mistletoe” is the latest single by the young super star and is the subject of our latest edition of Showdown. Now I ask you, should it be any surprise that the Youtube alum would have fans who are Youtube staples themselves? None of the following artists are newcomers to our silly competition but regardless we are pitting renditions of the Bieber hit by Joseph Vincent, AJ Rafael & Tori Kelly, and Jason Chen against each other. All you have to do is vote for your favorite!

So what’s the verdict? Are you partial to JV’s acoustic R&B? How about the dynamic duo chemistry between AJ Rafael and Tori Kelly? Don’t count out one of the most consistent cover artists doing it right now, Jason Chen! So you ready? Go ahead and tell us which one liked best!

Showdown: Jason Chen vs Dawen vs Joseph Vincent vs Cilla Chan

Welcome to Showdown, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

Bruno Mars has been something of a guaranteed hit-maker, and his newest single “It Will Rain” from the upcoming Twilight movie doesn’t seem to be any different. Which probably explains why so many artists are covering it. In fact we have a four-way battle this time around, in an event some are proclaiming as three guys, a girl, and a Bruno song. OK, no one calls it that but bare with me. Jason Chen, Dawen, Joseph Vincent, and Cilla Chan all decided to tackle the song, but only one can win the showdown and walk away with 1,000,000 a-Tunes points… which are completely worthless, by the way.

Jason Chen

Dawen

Joseph Vincent

Cilla Chan

All four artists have a sizeable presence/following on Youtube, some big than others but their executions of the song are all similar so it comes down to the details for this one. After a close listen do you favor Jason’s poppy vocals? How about Dawen’s unique phrasing? JV’s clean and cool singing style? Or does Cilla’s touch of soulful runs? Cast your vote now!

Showdown: Jae Jin vs Stacy Dudero

Why don’t we cap off the night with a little Showdown? This is where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

Frank Ocean has really made a name for himself over the course of the past year, so it’s been no surprise to see more and more covers of his music. Recently, two R&B singers – Jae Jin & Stacy Dudero – gave their own renditions of Ocean’s “Thinking About You”. We thought it’d be interesting to pit the Male vs Female vocals against each other, so check them out below.

Jae Jin

Stacy Dudero

On a macro level, there are a lot of similarities between the two renditions – but the differences are in the details. One artist took a few more R&B vocal liberties while the other stayed a little closer to the original. One had much crisper quality. One artist took a more cool, laid back approach with the other inserting just a touch more energy. So this one could be largely left to presences rather than raw tangible and quantitative differences.

So I guess the only question left at this point is… which one are you feeling more?

Showdown: J. Han of AMP vs City Boy

It’s been a good day, so what would you folks say to another edition of Showdown? This is where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

Canadian rapper Drake has always been a popular pick for covers and remixes in Youtube-land and his song “Headlines” is no exception. We’ve seen countless renditions all over the internet but two of the more recent ones to cross our screens were by DMV’s J. Han (of AMP fame) and AZ’s City Boy. The two MCs went in different directions content wise so it made for an interesting contrast over the same instrumental.

J. Han

City Boy

It was kind of interesting to see both artists start slow and kick it into double time in the latter half, but overall I’d say their demeanor and styles are nuanced on separate ends of the spectrum. I guess the only question is which one fits your liking better? J. Han’s college-kid, more light-hearted charm? Or is it City Boy’s more menacing and tenacious energy?

You know what to do, vote away!

Showdown: Cilla Chan vs Oak & Gorski

I think the time is right for another edition of Showdown, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover the same songs and vote for the one we think pulled it off better. Today’s match features the refreshing young college student Cilla Chan pitted against the veteran ‘cello-rock’ duo, Oak & Gorski. They each give their rendition of “Pumped Up Kicks” by indie-pop band, Foster the People. Let’s see how the two versions stack up against each other.

Cilla Chan

Oak & Gorski

Cilla’s vocal gives an almost R&B/Pop vibe to it with some more vocal flair. On the other hand Oak & Gorski provides a more polished but subdued final product, anchored by Ken Oak’s signature cello. It’s a little tough to make the call on this one but either way it was a refreshing competition because they didn’t cover one of the many over-saturated top 40 hits that everyone seems to be doing lately (*cough*Lighters*cough*How to Love*cough). Cast your vote for your favorite below!

Showdown: Gerald Ko vs Jennifer Chung

Oof. We haven’t had a Showdown feature since May! Why don’t we go ahead and rectify that, shall we? This time we have two Youtube staples in the form of Singindork888 aka Gerald Ko vs Jennifer Chung. They both tackle the comeback single from Demi Lovato that debuted in July – “Skyscraper”. So go ahead and watch/take a listen and vote for your favorite version!

Gerald Ko

Jennifer Chung

So who will it be? The more conventional pop cover by Jen Chung? Or perhaps the all acoustic re-arrangement by Gerald? In case you don’t know how this works it’s pretty simple. Go ahead and cast your vote using the widget below and see where your opinion falls with the rest of the general public. It’s all in good fun!
