WTF: Kina Grannis – Gangsta’s Paradise Cover (Live at Jammin Java 6-15-2010)
It’s been a while since our last Weekly Thursday Freebie but we’re bringing you an a-Tunes.net exclusive this time! You may recall that back in June we attended a show of an artist by the name of Kina Grannis. It took place at a venue called Jammin’ Java in Virginia and Kina definitely put together an awesome show. If you read the recap you may remember a video we shared of someone recording one of the unexpected highlights of the show… Kina covering Coolio’s 90′s hit “Gangsta’s Paradise”. Well in case you’ve forgotten about it we’re here to present you with the mp3 of the cover. The audio’s been cleaned up a bit and we added some fun (and purposefully corny) album art to round out the package. You don’t want to miss this one because Kina killed it! Who knew she was such a G?

WTF: Soulchef – Remember When
I wasn’t familiar with Soulchef before this week, nor is he an Asian American, but his album Remember When is this Week’s Thursday Freebie on a-Tunes. Why? Well first of all, Vox Merger & Hydroponikz are among the list of MC’s featured on the album and secondly, this is just a plain sick collection of tracks. After hearing the songs and then reading the following description, I knew I would love this release… and it doesn’t disappoint.
Remember When Hip Hop was this? Remember When Hip Hop was that? At a time where the future of Hip Hop is regularly questioned, and the constant debate about what’s “real” is still a hot topic; it’s often times hard to see beyond the obvious. When the same songs from the 70s and 80s were not only remixed in the 90s, but re-remixed again in the 2000s. When live instruments have been replaced with repetitive sounds. SoulChef’s release “Remember When…” takes a look back at the yesteryear of hip hop. His soulfully jazzy approach at production is mixed with live instruments and complimented by a talented line-up of artists who help paint his picture. This 10 track album is a nostalgic look at the fundamental Hip Hop we all originally fell in love with.
I haven’t heard all the tracks yet, but both Vox Merger & Hydro kilt their respective joints. If you’re a Hip-Hop head on any level, I think you’ll appreciate this one. Props to all the artists involved and to Soulchef for the awesome production.
WTF: Krystle Tugadi – Sunshine
The a-Tunes Weekly Thursday Freebie feature this time around is a irresistible little ditty called “Sunshine” by Krystle Tugadi. If you like Ingrid Michaelson, Yael Naïm, or Annie Little than you’re gonna love this new track. It’s screaming to be placed in the next Apple, Amazon, or Target ad. I really think you all are gonna enjoy this track and best of all it’s free for download (Why else would we feature it as the weekly thursday freebie!?). Here we go, another Weekly Thursdya Freebie! This one is a couple weeks old but in case you missed it Alexander Spit put out a send off of summer mixtape appropriately titled Until Next Summer. The mixtape is presented in conjunction with The Hundreds which I’m sure means a lot to some of you and nothing to others. WTF: Kero One – Yes Party People
Time for another Weekly Thursday Freebie. This one is out for only a limited time so I recommend you pick it up fast since it’s supposedly going down in a couple days. Kero One teamed up with Filipino-American producer Green Tea for “Yes Party People” off of Green’s Places & Space album. It’s available via the widget below. It’s a chill song and the production is definitely nice, so don’t miss out because as I said, it’s supposed to be free for only a couple more days.
WTF: Jennifer Chung – You Won
Welcome back to another Weekly Thursday Freebie. OK, it’s hardly weekly at this point but you can’t hate on us for spotlighting free music can you? This week Jennifer Chung has posted up a song off her EP Common Simple Beautiful from last year called “You Won”. This is one of my favorites from the EP and I think you’ll love it too. WTF: The Asian Hip Hop Connect Vol. 1 Mixtape
A few weeks back, our friends over at Asian Hip-Hop Times dropped a new mixtape called the Asian Hip Hop Connect Vol.1. It features talent from all over the world including some folks that are frequently featured here at a-Tunes. You can find tracks from Kato, Triangle Offense, Doc Whisper, Virus44, IZ, Jackie Chain, ND, Kenji Astro and more! The quality varies but there are definitely a few gems on here. And since it’s free I recommend you check it our for yourself and keep the track’s you’re feeling!

WTF: Shin-B – “See You There” & “I’m Ill”
OK, so WTF is beginning to stray more and more from being a Weekly Thursday Freebie, but until I think of another fun acronym we’ll continue to give you some free material now and then. For this installment we got two new tracks from Shin-B, who continues to release songs and snippets here and there as her September album release date for Three Choices approaches. Her most recent drops are the songs “See You There” & “I’m Ill”. I’m really digging a lot of the style and direction choices Shin-B has been making lately, including both of these tracks. On SYT, she get’s a little more experimental, mixing in different genre’s of music. I’m Ill is a more traditional hip-hop track, but the beat is pretty sick too. WTF: Clara Chung x Alex Hwang – Smile with Candy Hearts
It’s been a couple weeks since out last Weekly Thursday Freebie and we apologize, things have been busy. But we wanted to pick things back up again with this week by making sure you grab the free DL of Clara Chung and Alex Hwang’s cover of “Smile” and “Candy Hearts”. They shared the video a couple months back, but then quietly released the single as a free DL a few weeks afterwards. It’s truly a great cover, and for those of you that missed it are advised to download it!
