WTF: Organic Thoughts – The Purest Form

Welcome to another edition of Weekly Thursday Freebie!

Back in 2004 the hip-hop group Organic Thoughts released the album The Purest Form and helped become one of the first Asian rap groups to get major distribution (I picked up my copy from the local Best Buy). The group has gone through some member changes and seem to be on an indefinite hiatus. At the time of this album, the members were Diwrekt, Fraze, Onpoynt, Reason, and El Gambina (an ill femcee), but also heavily featured Illmind and Tonio.

I wouldn’t consider the album a “classic” but I will say it’s pretty strong. But more than anything it’s influential and something of a trailblazer for AA hip-hop. The album has some great features including the legendary Large Professor. Organized Konfusion, Uniq, Chan, Eyesoulated Mindz, the Mountain Brothers, and Andrew Choi were also present and representing.

It’s a pretty jam packed release, and I recommend you check out this piece of AA music history. It may still be available on iTunes, and if it is and you’re feeling it, I encourage you to purchase it, or at least the tracks you’re digging.

Anyway, track list and link are after the break!

WTF: BP & Odds – The Gradient EP

Welcome to another Weekly Thursday Freebie. For this week we are featuring the brand new EP called The Gradient by hip-hop duo BP & Odds. This MC/Producer team release their album The Medium just a couple months ago but never let off their grind and wanted to share some new material with the world. The Gradient goes in a different sonic direction from their past work and allows them try their hand at something new.

Less than 2 months since the release of their full-length debut album “THE MEDIUM”, BP & ODDS (the boom bap novelists) drop “THE GRADIENT” EP as a free download on BPANDODDS.COM. A conceptual collection, “THE GRADIENT” features 6 songs of gritty drums as the vehicle, a multi-synthesized soundscape, illustrious basslines, rhymes and cuts; all inspired by Buttonpusha’s witnessing Aurora Borealis while living in Alaska.
BP & ODDS have done it again with this masterpiece, “THE GRADIENT”.

This EP dropped just under a week ago and if you haven’t gotten it already you are missing out. The team went in a very “Dilla-esque” direction and honestly it sounds great. Want to know where to get it? You already know where to check!

WTF: Brian’s English Tracks from “Manifold”

Korean American KPOP singer of the now defunct Fly to the Sky and rising solo artist released his second solo album at the end of 2009. Entitled ‘Manifold’, the album took Brian in a very current, pop friendly direction. As I was listening to it I was pleasantly surprised to find that he had included english versions to three of the songs as bonus tracks at the end of the album.

The tracks that he re-recorded in english are:

  1. Do It (Move It English Ver.)
  2. Tears Run Dry (눈물이 마르면… English Ver.)
  3. Bullet (English Ver.)

Of the three tracks, ‘Do It’ & ‘Bullet’ are the more upbeat numbers. The production is pretty solid on both tracks but I think ‘Do It’ is the superior song. It’s pretty catchy and has a great beat. ‘Tears Run Dry’ is a pop-ballad really similar to the stylings of Nick Lachey… you know, pop soft-rock. Brian sounds great on it but I’m not gonna front and say it’s not a little bit sappy. ‘Bullet’ has a great beat with a catchy synth but I think the writing is pretty bad. It’s just a lot of cliches and full of corny imagery. It’s fun to listen to if you don’t pay too much attention haha.

Anyways all three tracks are available for you as this Week’s Thursday Freebie.

Interested? You know where to find the link!

WTF: Jin – Merry X’Mas Mixtape

Happy new year everyone! Sorry we missed last week (I’m sure you can forgive us since it was New Year’s Eve), but we wanted to make sure we started 2010 right and not miss the first Weekly Thursday Freebie.

As I’m sure many of you know, American born Chinese MC Jin has been doing his thing over in Hong Kong for the past few years, and doing it BIG might I add. True this is a few week’s after the fact but towards the end of last year he dropped a FREE mixtape in the spirit of Christmas. (Shoutout to ARW for posting it up!)

Just a warning, the mixtape is almost exclusively in Chinese. But if you ever wondered how the language sounded in rap you should check it out regardless!

He spits over a lot of famous beats by artists like the Black Eyed Peas, Kanye, Drake, Asher Roth, etc. As I said, I know this release ain’t for everyone but you gotta at least be curious right?! Haha….

WTF: Techniquelle – Lullaby For One

For this edition of Weekly Thursday Freebie we’re bringing you a new artist whom I just learned about recently. She’s known as Techniquelle and according to her Myspace she’s a “conglomeration of different elements including jazz, rock, and experimental/electronica sounds”. As you can probably tell, she ain’t your average asian-american female singer, instead she mixes things up to create a unique sound.

Her debut album, Outline of a Cloud, was released just a few months back (August) and is available via CD Baby but Techniquelle has offered to release one of the album’s singles ‘Lullaby For One’ as a free download to our a-Tunes readers!

“Lullaby For One,” a song written in the subtly asymmetrical time signature of 5/8, returns to a resolved 6/8 and explores an incompleteness, a sensation of breaking relations with another person.

If you’re looking for something unique, soothing, and beautiful then check out this song along with the rest of Techniquelle’s music.

WTF: Passion x Reena Lynn – My Boo Cover

Waddup a-Tunes!? It’s time for another Weekly Thursday Freebie and this time we’ve got a throwback acoustic performance from over 5 years ago. I remember seeing this years back, probably around 2004 when I was still in college. Passion and Reena Lynn do an awesome acoustic cover of the r&b hit “My Boo” by Usher & Alicia Keys.

They’ve covered it a number of times but the rendition above is my favorite one that I’ve heard or seen thus far. They definitely do the song justice with their smooth, stripped rendition.

So this week you can grab both the video and song! Neither video nor audio quality is the greatest but it isn’t terrible either. But I mean what do you expect of an audio rip from a video posted online in 2004!? Back then HD was just a dream to most. If you’re an audio/video-phile it may bug you but everyone should be able to enjoy this one =).

You know the deal, link after the jump!

WTF: Andy Suzuki – Free Hundred Pianos EP

What’s going on everyone? Time for another Weekly Thursday Freebie!

This time an artist by the name of Andy Suzuki reached out to me informing me about his free EP called Free Hundred Pianos.

IMG_1063

This is how he described himself. ”I am an acoustic singer-songwriter (think susie suh/vienna teng/john mayer/gavin degraw) based in NYC. My dad is Japanese, and my mother is Jewish, so I am one of the few and proud Japanese Jews out there!”

I’d personally classify his music as a bit of early 2000’s stripped down coldplay meets Jason Mraz if he played the piano with a little bit of Tim Be Told in there as well. As you can probably guess, the keys Andy’s main weapon and he plays it well. It’s a great acoustic EP and definitely a-Tunes approved.

Find out what Mr. Suzuki had to say about the EP along with the download link after the jump!
