WTF: Phil Good’s Cover of John Legend’s “Everybody Knows”

I think most music fans can agree that covering John Legend is no easy task. It takes a singer with soul and raw talent… and thankfully today’s Weekly Thursday Freebie artist has a ton of both. We’ve featured Phil Good in the past with an old recording of his original “I’m in Love“, but it’s already been two months since then and we’ve recently come across something a little more recent. The Soul/R&B singer recently went in with a full band and produced this fantastic cover of “Everybody Knows”. It is definitely as good as the original… and considering the source material that’s a HUGE accomplishment. Word is he’s slowly getting back into the music grind (here’s an example), so be on the lookout for this guy.

You can find the DL link for the single after the break.

WTF: Bandcamp x Map The Soul (Kero x Tablo x MYK)

I think Bandcamp has been one of the greatest web 2.0 type of sites to come along for the independent music industry. It provides instant, easy access free of the limitations and restrictions of your typical online music distributors and allows artists and fans alike more choices. It’s likely the reason why you see so many artists featured on this site choosing to spread their music through band camp, with prices that vary from free to whatever you want to pay and everything in between.

But a Weekly Thursday Freebie wouldn’t be a freebie if you had to give up a McChicken for a track would it? That’s why we decided to go 100% legit this week and show you a few offerings from some artists that are either in or affiliated with Map the Soul. That’s right folks, it’s time for some music from Kero One, Tablo and MYK.

WTF: Clara Chung – Offbeat (Live at ProjectKorea III 4-3-2010)

Welcome to your Weekly Thursday Frebie! We have a very special download for you today. Hopefully many of you know who Clara Chung is by now. She did win Kollaboration after all. And you may have read our coverage of the ProjectKorea III event held a few weeks back, featuring Clara as one of the acts where she performed a number of songs including her awesome single ‘Offbeat’. Well you know we wouldn’t go to the show and not bring you guys back something, so we lugged some recording gear along and captured this gem of a performance.

We are happy to present to you the live version of Clara Chung’s “Offbeat” from ProjectKorea III. It’s seriously one of my favorite songs of the moment and if you’re feeling it too we highly encourage you to support the girl and buy the studio version! It’s only a buck!

Anyway, we hope you enjoy the track and be sure to catch Ms Chung live if you ever get the chance. It’s definitely worth it.

WTF: Notorious MSG – Die Hungry (2004)

It’s that time again! Weekly Thursday Freebie!

Roughly 5,6 years ago a comedy troupe by the name of the Notorious MSG (an obvious play on the name of a a revered Hip-Hop legend) broke out onto the scene with a crazy act and an even crazier attitude. They quickly became known for their outrageous, in your face, fresh off the boat act coupled with their arguably hilarious music. They are still around today, albeit with a member change, but are still doing their things, dropping a new comedy short once in a while. But since it’s six years old I thought it’d be safe to share with you their debut album Die Hungry featuring their lead single ‘Straight Out of Canton’.

You can watch the MV below.

So if you think you can handle more of this brand of zaniness, feel free to check out the album in full. Link after the jump. And of course, if you’re feeling it, don’t let em Die Hungry and purchase their work.

WTF: Jane Lui x Jason Mraz Sing ’1000 Things’

Welcome to another edition of Weekly Thursday Freebie! I’m away from home this week so this one had to be a quickie but the other day Jane Lui shared a performance she had singing with Jason Mraz himself of his single ’1000 things’. I believe this recording is from a show in San Diego back in 2002 where Jane opened for the artist.

She pretty much only sang back up vocals but her voice blended beautifully with Mr A to the Z.

Sorry for the minor release this week but we’ll have something more substantial for you in the near future!

WTF: GT – In Transition Mixtape (2008)

OK, so when a-Tunes was first started I made a promise to myself to never use this platform as shameless promotion for my own music and to use it an impartial manner as I would for any other artist that we support here. With that said I looked at today’s date… April 8th, 2010 and realized wow, it’s been exactly two years since I dropped my debut mixtape In Transition. I’m sure the vast majority of you are unfamiliar with my work, which is understandable but considering that it’s the two year anniversary of this project I thought it’d be appropriate to share with you all for this Week’s Thursday Freebie.

Front Cover

The mixtape was recorded all throughout my college years  and for about a year afterwards as well. As you can imagine from the lengthy time frame there’s going to be a wide range in quality and growth on this project, it was all a matter of transition, hence the title. The tape features guest appearances from Albee, RK, Shinobi, Jacqueline Chun, DCho, and Kato along with some behind the scenes help from Jinny Kim, Johnnyphlo & Kevin Hotography. For what it’s worth, I felt like I grew a lot as a person and artist during the duration of this mixtape, and I also feel like I’ve grown a lot more since. Love it or hate it I present to you In Transition, happy two years old!

WTF: Nemo – Hidden Agenda

Here’s a blast from the past! It’s time for our Weekly Thursday Freebie again and this time we dug back over half a decade to find a little gem of a rock song from the now defunct band Nemo. It’s entitled Hidden Agenda and even had a music video that was released back in the good old days of 2004, pre-twitter, pre-iphone, pre-facebook. Imagine that. It went a little something like this:

I consider this band a bit of a group of trailblazers as they went on to compete at Kollaboration and had a small buzz going in the mid 2000′s. It’s a shame they are no longer active though I admit I don’t know a whole lot about the members or what they are up to now. If you find yourself rocking out to this one then you can find the dl link with a zip file of both the video (Low Quality, it’s all they had back in the day) and the mp3 after the break!

WTF: J – In My Lifetime

Good evening and welcome to another edition of Weekly Thursday Freebie. We’ve got something interesting for your today, a lesser known project album from the Korean-American gone KPOP star, J. I’ve been a fan of her since the beginning of her career back in the 90′s and though she’s faded considerably from the limelight she still manages to drop a single or album here and there. A few years back she offered up an album entitled In My Lifetime and it was a departure from her usual material. I’ve been meaning to offer this one up for a while now although I do understand that not everyone is gonna be feeling this choice for two reasons. One, although most of the album in English, the last few songs are in Korean, so I imagine many of you could care less about those. Two, every song is about and related to her Christian faith. It was a very personal project for her, one that didn’t exactly take over the charts but I doubt that was the point. Anyway, with the rate music is released and forgotten in Korea I thought it’d be safe to offer it to you all who may be interested.

Personally I really liked this album. There were a couple tracks that were either corny or boring but overall it was a refreshing album and one I could relate to. I really enjoyed it when she went the acoustic/R&B route. It’s only 9 tracks but a couple of them feature Korean American rapper Jed, who used to be a part of the mildly successful group D-Bace… but I digress. You can DL the entire album, so I hope you enjoy!

WTF: Phil Good – I’m In Love

Wassup folks? Sorry for missing last week, things were crazy busy but  we’re back with another Weekly Thursday Freebie.

This one’s a throwback from a few years back by R&B artist Phil Good. He’s hasn’t been very active lately (at least on a public, online level) though I’ve heard some new material second hand. This guy is an incredible singer with a soulful voice and in the middle part of last decade he dropped an honest, beautiful song simple titled “I’m In Love”. One listen and I think you’ll be won over as a fan too. I’m not completely sure what he’s up to now, or if he plans to start releasing more music soon. It really is a shame his music is rare and hard to find.

So with that I hope you can enjoy this short, simple, and sweet sample of the singer known as Phil Good.
