The Videoless Youtube Remixes Round-Up 5/3/12

We did it before, a couple months back; bringing you a collection of remixes done by artists that chose to forgo creating a video too. Instead we get a mixture of static images, cover art, and if we’re lucky, a slide show of some type. This has been a staple of the digital age for Hip-Hop artists, as it’s too time consuming to make a video for all their mixtape-ready songs – whether or not you feel they are cutting corners is a completely different story. At the very least you can listen to the following in the background, knowing your not missing much by not paying attention to the (lack of) visuals!

Misfit Remixes “Sail” by Awol Nation

Ed-Two Remixes “The Recipe” by Kendrick Lamar x Dr. Dre

Thai Remixes “Donald Trump” by Mac Miller

J-ricz x Sizzle Remix “Live My Life” by Far East Movement x Justin Bieber

Two Cents: GT’s Top 10 MVs from 2011 (and 10 Honorable Mentions)

2011 was a banner year in the world of Asian-American music. We saw more releases than ever, more artists achieving more mainstream success, and more fans across more ethnic backgrounds recognizing the great music by our artists. But along with more of the good comes more of the bad – with there also being an influx in mediocre music, an increase in hate and bigotry (check Youtube comments) and even more pressure to try and stand out. That’s why I wanted to look back on the past year and choose what I consider to be my top 10 favorite music videos from 2011. Now this doesn’t mean that these are the MVs with the top production values (although this is often the case), but rather it’s a reflection of what I found to be the most well executed, balanced, and entertaining visuals. On the very last page we also have a list of 10 honorable mentions that I thought deserved to be recognized as well.

So without futher ado let’s jump straight into number 10…

10. IAMMEDIC – “Spaceship” (article)

Electronica-Pop group IAMMEDIC took the concept of their song “Spaceship” to the max by injecting a silly Star Trek inspired motif and alien abduction. The video is fun, looks great, and represents the high energy of the audio perfectly. Deep? Not so much, but fun and well executed? Very much so.

Directors/Cinematographers/ Dan Fisher and Ed Park
Produced by Joe Park and IAMMEDIC
Edited by Steve Arcenio
Visual Effects – Ed Park and Derrick Lee
3D Model by Daniel Harris
“Spaceship” Written and Produced by IAMMEDIC

The Youtube Rap Remix Round-Up – 10/26/11

Mid-week hump… why don’t we have another Youtube round-up! Today’s theme is “rap remix”, so all of the following are beats that our rappers decided to flip and use for their own purposes. Nothing wrong with that, just as long as you recognize it’s not a completely organic offering. The first two in our collection are placed as such because they have, by far, the best production values among the group. Thai’s in particular, is up to 454′s usual impeccable visual standards. But don’t sleep on Miss TLu of On Fire, the girl shows promise. The rest of the gang include a collab by Toestah & Jen Chung, LA’s 3Strykes representing too, Lil Crazed with a little spin-off of MGK, DUKE keeping things fun with a LMFAO joint and Verse rounding out the pack. Lot’s of Jay-Z x Kanye beats in here, I guess they are a crowd favorite.

3 Strykes Posts “3s Up”

The city of angel’s 3 Strykes Krew have dropped a little freeverse video that they’ve dubbed “3s Up”. The fellas have a pretty decent track record in selecting some dirty beats to spit over. The video is simple but clean and it’s an overall entertaining piece of Hip-Hop for your Monday evening viewing enjoyment. In this case, more so if you’re from the west.

Furis Talks About “All the $ in the World”

The rapper better known as Furis just dropped a new mini visual for an older track called “All the $ in the World”. It’s really just a verse and a hook but there are some  special cameos at the end of the clip including Dumbfoundead, Verseatile, Chosen One, 3 Strykes Krew, Lyricks and more. A cool watch for your Saturday evening.

3Strykes Wants You to Be a “Geek Freak”

The 3Strykes Krew returns with some new tunage and an interesting fam-sourcing campaign where they are asking for people to submit their own original dances to their song “Geek Freak”. I gotta admit, it’s got a real funky feel to it – there are definitely a lot of possibilities here. A strong beat selection coupled with their west coast raps make for a good party track. Take a listen below and see if you’re up for winning some cash

3Strykes x Surrilla Drop the “Beat Oven” MV

LA’s 3Strykes have just dropped a new MV for their song “Beat Oven” featuring Surrilla. The track makes great use of a Beethoven sample (get the title now?). I gotta say I’m really impressed with the production values. They made the most out of the location with great editing, animation, and post effects. The track itself is a gritty banger with that still keeps a west coast style intact. The song grows on you. Pretty nice, we’ll definitely keep 3Strykes on our radar.

K-Town Hip-Hop Night Set for Sept 3rd

If you’re in LA this weekend then be sure to stop by the K-Town Hip-Hop night. They’ve got a full lineup with Furis, 3Strykes, Shin-B, Million Dollar Babies & the Interpreters, MC Misfit, Surrilla, Sean Rhee, Aero-K, Daresay, and Gepetto all set to perform. The event will be hosted by Dumbfoundead & DJ Zo along with Annie J. There aren’t too many opportunities to see that many hip-hop aritsts under one roof for a single event so don’t miss out! But sorry kids, 21+ only.

The event is at:

Blink Cafe & Bar

Kollaboration Hip-Hop & Laugh-Off on June 12th

An interesting spin-off event from the original Kollaboration, the Hip-Hop & Laugh-Off, is scheduled for next Friday, June 12th.

Competitors include Dumbfoundead, Verseatile, tier2, 3Strykes Krew, Starstudded, Funky Soul & The Asylum.
Comedians include Gery Bednob, Edwin San Juan, & Kevin Shea. You can go here for more info on them.

You can read the official press release here.

Now I’m not entirely sure what the reasoning behind this spin off but I imagine it’s to give a slightly more focused venue for the comedy and urban acts that spill over from the original Kollaboration competition. Should be a fun night so if you’re in the LA area, be sure to check it out.
