Two Cents: GT’s Top 10 Performance Clips from 2011

OK. One week down in 2012, and 51 one left to go! We’re continuing our 2011 countdown series with a recap of my top 10 favorite performance clips from last year. The criteria for this list came down to a mixture factors, including the actual performance, the crowd response, production values, and sheer overall entertainment. The only other restriction was that the clip had to be released in the calendar year of 2011, even if the performance is from earlier. Lastly, click through till the end for a bonus pick that didn’t quite fit in my top 10 but shouldn’t be ignored.

Now, starting with my number 10 pick, we have…

10. April Chase – “All You Need to Say” (article)

Ever since first discovering April Chase a couple years ago, they quickly became one of my favorite Pop/Rock bands. The group encompasses radio friendly hooks with a great rock foundation, wrapped up with Carina Valdes’ sweet but gutsy vocals. The only thing the above clip that is missing, was an audience to appreciate the unplugged rendition of “All You Need to Say” from their EP, Still Breathing. It’s always a blessing when a rock group still sounds just as fun and engaging without the benefit of studio polish.

Don’t Miss This Performance of ‘Home:Word’ Songs by Magnetic North, Taiyo Na, Vudoo Soul, Sam Kang, Alfa & More

These are honetly my favorite type of clips. Energetic, passionate, and infectious performances by artists that relish each other’s company as much as they do their art. Mag North & Taiyo have released the following clip of them on stage performing tracks from their Home:Word release. Vudoo, Sam Kang, and Alfa Garcia joined them, rounded out by the Home:Word House band – giving a great performance that I’m jealous for not being able to catch live back in April.

Alfa Shares a “Missed Opportunity”

Alfa Garcia decided to celebrate her birthday by releasing a new song called “Missed Opportunity”. In a cute but inspired move, she opted to illustrate the video by forgoing conventional means and instead uses stick figures and hand written notes & doodles. Personally, I found it to be a wise choice as it offers something refreshing and novel when compared to your common Youtube fare.

Today is my birthday, so I thought the best way to celebrate would be to share a new song! :)

Instead of doing the regular video, I decided to show off my stick-figure drawing skills, and my chicken scratch handwriting. :) Both of which I hope you’ll at least find endearing.

Recorded on FlipCamHD, GarageBand and Blue Snowball mic, with piano, vocals, and glockenspiel by me, Alfa Garcia. Edited on iMovie. More at www.alfa-music.com.

The Girls That Play Instruments Youtube Cover Round-Up – 9/1/11

Interestingly enough, I noticed that a lot of recent covers were some of our favorite female artists showcasing their talents on their musical instruments of choice. This time around we have Alfa singing a bluesy version of “Grenade”, a faith inspired cover by Esther Lee (aka ThatsEstherLy), Cate Song singing some Jimmy Eat World, Erin Paula on the 6 string for “Skyscraper” and Clara C getting her Weezy on. It’s inspiring to see how talented these girls are, especially since some of these just may be better then the original.

Alfa Garcia Interviews w/ Droku Mag

The good folks at Droku have an interview out with LA transplant via New Jersey, Alfa Garcia. The multi-placing Kollaboration contestant talks about her experiences with the competition, working with Mike Isberto, music at a young age, auditioning for American Idol and The Voice, and more. A great little read and something to hold you over until she starts to crank out the music releases again. Catch the rest of the interview and a charming little photo shoot of the singer over at droku!

[Music Video] Alfa – “First Sight of Land”

Alfa Garcia has been busy making the move across the country but like any great artist, took the time to document and immortalize her journey with her art. The song is called “First Sight of Land” and was inspired by her many travels from the Right to Left coasts of the USA. The video appropriately features clips of her at various locations and events, allowing us to go along for the ride. It’s a heartfelt acoustic tune, true to Alfa’s style that I’m sure most of you will enjoy.

[Music Video] Magnetic North x Taiyo Na x Jin – “I Got My”

The folks behind the Home:Word album, Magnetic North & Taiyo Na have finally put out the music video to their song “I Got My” featuring Jin. But I doubt you’re ready for what you’re about to see as the crew has dug deep and reached out to all their contacts, friends, affiliates, etc to be a part of this MV. There are cameos from the Blue Scholars, Denizen Kane, Conchita Campos, DFD, Christina Chung, FM, Thomas Apartment, James Ha, Vienna Teng, DanAKADan, El Gambina, Cynthia Lin, Dawen, Bambu, DJ Phatrick, Kiwi, Heather Park, Vudoo, Lyrics, Manifest, Alfa, AJ Rafael, Jay Legaspi and a whole lot more. Those are just some of the musicians, there are a ton of activists, media folk, dancers, artists, students, educators, and more who also had a role. This is easily one of the dopest concepts put to music and unifying MV’s I’ve seen all year. Great release.

Legaci Interviews w/ NorthJersey.com

The incredibly talented R&B group Legaci just had an interview posted on NorthJersey.com, written by none other than singer/songwriter Alfa Garcia. It’s a short read but they drop a lot of tidbits on what it’s been like since they started touring with Justin, along with a few hints of possible things to come. Make sure to check it out either after the break or directly at NJ.

Alfa Garcia Performs “The Kind of Girl”

Alfa explains that she wrote this song back in 2007 but finally decided to reveal it for the first time a couple days back. This girl is so talented, putting down her guitar and playing the ivories instead. I like the lyrics of the track but this performance clip was a bit rough in certain spots. I’d like to hear a finely tuned studio version with everything ironed out.
