The Mid-week Music Video Mini-Reviews Youtube Round-Up – 1/15/14

We don’t have as many releases to share with you today, but what we lack in quantity, these videos seem to make up in quality. It’s a short list so if you’ve got 10-15 minutes to kill, this would certainly be an enjoyable way to do it. We’re pretty much split down the middle here, with two domestic MVs and two international imports.

Run River North – “Fight to Keep”
I was very excited to find out that Run River North was returning with a new video and even more so when I heard it was debuting on Conan. So how’s the end result? From an entertainment standpoint, I enjoyed the odd survival/horror narrative they chose to employ in the MV. As for technically, the folk-pop band eschewed color and as a result it makes for an interesting but overtly dark (in terms of contrast) watch.

Chops x Tiger JK x Tasha – “Turn It Up”
Chops comissioned the team of Steve Nguyen and Choz Belen to create music video for his song with Tiger JK & Tasha. We’ve seen Choz’s heavily stylized animation before, and even after all these years it’s still a refreshing medium to flesh out an MV. Although none of the artists appeared in this, I still think you’ll like this one.

The Mid-Week Music Video Mini-Reviews Youtube Round-Up – 10/31/13

Now this is more like it. The past few weeks have been a little thin in terms of Music Video output, but a number of artists have dropped videos since our last round-up (less than a week ago), and we’ve posted them up to share with you. There are a couple of highly anticipated clips, some fun collaborations, and a lot of variety to go around.

Jhene Aiko x Childish Gambino – “Bed Peace”
Jhene Aiko & Childish Gambino channeling Yoko Ono & Lennon? Unexpected but it kinda works. The video plays out as an interesting homage to the iconic musical couple, but I’m much more into the track itself. If this is an indicator of what we can expect from Sail Out, consider me excited.’

Chops x Paul Kim x Dumbfoundead – “No Turning Back”
This track is pretty representative of what this site is all about. Artists who are each considered some of the strongest players in their own mediums, coming together to make good music. Chops, PK & DFD all on one joint? Sign me up. Strength In Numbers is setting up some high expectations.

The Mid-Week Music Video Mini-Reviews Youtube Round-Up – 9/26/13

Yea, this “mid-week” review is a day late, so sue us. Actually no, don’t sue us. We’re broke. BUT I promise you it’s worth the wait. We have an epic comeback from the OG’s of the scene, and a few change-of-pace-songs to give some of your favorite artists a little more variety in their repertoire.

Chops x Mountain Brothers x Ann One – “Keep On”
If you can only watch one music video in this list, make it this one. Why? Simply because musically, this is the significant drop of the group. The friggin’ Mountain Brothers have reunited for this one! What more needs to be said? Even Chops himself spits a verse! Oh and Ann One brings that soulful vocal for the hook. It’s all decidedly old-school and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The veterans still got it.

AMP – “Better”
Song wise, it’s one of their stronger singles in a while, at least from a Hip-Hop standpoint. You can hear this track off their recent The Transition EP. The video concept is interesting but didn’t quite live up to it’s potential in execution. Def feelin’ the track though.

Kawehi – “A Pig’s Flight”
It just dawned upon me… Kawehi’s voice has freakishly similar qualities to Merril Bainbridge. Tell me they don’t sound alike! But anyway, I’m loving her new song and video. It ain’t complicated and doesn’t need to be. Sometimes you just need to dance in a pig suit in the middle of a field, am-I-right?

What? Our headline is a lofty claim, but believe us, it’s not unsubstantiated. Chops has spent the past couple years working with a whole slew of artists that we cover – making this essentially a collection of the best of the best of folks that have graced the pages of this blog. Just take one look at the lineup on this album!

Ann One (LA), Baiyu(NYC), Bambu (LA), Catzie of Yellow Rage (PHL), Connie Lim (LA), Decipher (PHL),DJ Bonics (PHL/PGH), DJ Neil Armstrong (NYC), DJ Roli Rho (NYC),Dumbfoundead (LA), El Gambina (NJ), Erika David (Bay Area), Hopie (SF), Hoya(NYC), J-Key (NYC), Joanlee (LBC), Kiwi (LA), Lil Crazed (MN), Matt Cab (Tokyo), Mic Barz (ATL), Mountain Brothers (PHL), Nikko Dator (LV), Paul Kim (LA), Prometheus Brown (SEA), Rekstizzy (NYC), Rocky Rivera (SF), Ruby Ibarra (Bay Area), Tasha aka Yoonmirae (Korea), Thai (PDX), Tiger JK (Korea), Timothy Flu (ATL), Verbal of M-Flo / Teriyaki Boyz (Tokyo), and Yellow Boyz (ATL)

It’s called Strength in Numbers and I’ve known that this project was in the works for some time, but the sheer size of the roster for this album still blows my mind. And perhaps most amazing of all, this brings us the long overdue reunion of the OGs themselves, the Mountain Brothers. I personally can’t wait for this to drop. It’s slated for a December 2013 release.

Snapshot: The Mountain Brothers Reunited

Peril-L, Chops, Style Infinite

Allow me to be perfectly honest for one moment. If the above image doesn’t get you hyped up, there’s a very good chance you are perusing the wrong ethnic focused music blog. Two words: Mountain Brothers. The photo above makes perfect sense considering we have new music coming from the recently reunited trio along the way. And now, more than ever, am I excited to hear what they have in store for us.

Two Cents: Inspire’s Jeff Yoo Talks Asian-American Hip-Hop

Jeff Yoo returns for another guest post, here on a-Tunes. Here, he talks about Hip-Hop in the context of Asian-Americana.

I’ve been a huge hip hop fan for years so it’s a great honor and privilege that I get to do a hip hop music review for — Shout outs to Mr. Gifted Thought for the opportunity! If this works out, I might put out some more reviews of my favorite albums & artists. God bless.

Jeff is the founder of Inspire – “a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization committed to creating an outlet for Christians where they can express worship to God through their talents and passion for music.” We’ve partnered with Inspire in the past, bringing you exclusive coverage of their first East-Coast show early last year. The Mountain Brothers to Reunite?

OK, the above image is obviously an old picture, but if what Chops tweeted earlier today is true… we may finally be able to see an updated version. If you follow this site and don’t know about the MB‘s… then it would behoove you to do some catch up reading. I hope what Chops has announced is true and sees itself to fruition. It’s been too long since Triple Crown. Chops has stayed busy in the industry, mostly as a producer, but his two mountainous brethren have long since hung up their mics for more conventional careers. All I can say is, I. Can’t. Wait.
