Worst Ever: Mediocre Marketing 101

So I was doing my routine rounds among the various KPOP sites out there on teh internets and I came across this interesting little ad that made me do a double take.

Exactly what message am I supposed to get out of this? Of course, I recognized the individuals in the banner as members of the mega KPOP group SNSD but even still… it all seemed out of context.

What if I weren’t so familiar with the latest KPOP world and I saw this ad? Then all I would see are 5 attractive young girls beckoning me to “Come to Seoul! GO”. Is this what a tourist can expect in the capital of South Korea? Beautiful women waiting at the airport to welcome me and wait on me hand and foot?

Of course clicking the banner clears things up a little bit as I’m able to see this ad is focused on one small part of the Korean tourism campaign, the yearly Seoul Dream Concert series. And suddenly it all makes a litte more sense but then another question came to mind, how do the other 4 members who were cut from the ad feel about their exclusion? Were they too ugly to trick and intrigue the average web surfer to navigate to the Seoul Dream Concert youtube page? Did the advertisement agency think they simply weren’t good enough to include in this crudely photoshopped montage meant to superficially represent an entire nation’s appeal?

Oh well sucks to be them.

And let’s be real… if they wanted to use half of SNSD’s likeness to bring in tourism, were those REALLY the best photos they could find?

I swear some dude at the ad firm let his middle school aged nephew run this campagin. It’s so mediocre and confusing that I actually want to go to Seoul less now.

Beat Freaks member choreographs for SNSD

SNSDxBF

Massively popular KPOP group SNSD has enlisted the help of Rino Nakasone, a member of ABDC season 3 runner up crew Beat Freaks. So the question is, what can a dancer from an American crew with street cred and an avant garde sense of style do with a group of cute, super polished pop singers from Korea? Let’s hope the best of both worlds come out of this union. I admit, I’m a fan of ‘Gee’ just as much as the next guy but I wouldn’t mind seeing SNSD rough things up a little bit.

Just ‘Cause: Younha covers SNSD

Recently KPOP artist Younha did a great little acoustic cover of SNSD’s ‘Gee’.

Sure, this version of the song may make it lose some of it’s cute, catchy appeal but its still a great twist on a well known song.

‘Gee’ is starting to remind me of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella‘, with everyone and their mother covering the song.

Tired & lazy from work. Oh well… here’s whats going on in the YPM world.

Two Cents: SNSD evolved from birds

OK, so if you are now or have  at any point in the last couple years been a KPOP fan, then you have heard of SNSD aka Girls Generation. They hit the scene as part of SM’s master plan of world dominance and haven’t looked back since. Now I’ll be quite frank and say I was never that into the group. They all seemed so young and cutesy and there is just so friggn many of them it kind of boggled my mind.

Putting any personal dispositions aside I have to admit their new single is catchy in that mind numbingly repetitive and overbearingly cute kind of way. I can’t say I’m any more or any less of a fan now but I will admit that I did pay a little more attention this time around.

And I realized something…
