The In-Studio Covers Youtube Round-Up – 4/26/12

Thursday feels about right for another round-up, what do you think? We’ve put together a collection of in-studio performance videos where the artists chose to stay in the comfort of their creative environments. R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, and everything in between all have representation in this mix. With 10 videos, I’m positive you’ll find something to enjoy, if not all.

A couple notes:

  • Sam Tsui kills it again.
  • I still can’t believe that new Brian McKnight song actually happened
  • I prefer Gabe’s version of “Strip” to the original
  • Erika’s cover/flip is on point

The “Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber Cover Round-Up – 4/16/12

At first we were considering putting together a Showdown for “Boyfriend” by the Beebz (since it’s been a while), but after looking at all the covers we’ve compiled we realized it’s just not feasible. Artists seem to love J Beezy just as much as the rest of his fans because we have 9 covers of a month old song – and I’m sure we missed a few along the way. Anyway, if you haven’t hit your “Boyfriend” replay quota yet, then have at it with the following!

The “I Won’t Give Up” Youtube Covers Round-Up Part 2 – 3/21/12

Back in January, we had a round-up of artists that all covered Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up”. We opted not to do a Showdown because all the artists were pitted against one another many times before, being previously featured in our head-to-head feature. In this collection of videos, it’s more of the same story as another familiar batch of singers decided to give their own spin to the song.

Showdown: Kina Grannis vs Gerald Ko vs Megan Lee vs Jason Chen

It’s been going on a month since our last Showdown feature, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

The time seems ripe for a new one. For this post, we have a four way battle where all the competitors are singing “Safe and Sound” – a slow, heartfelt country tune by Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars. Kina Grannis, Gerald Ko, Megan Lee, and Jason Chen all had the good fortune of covering this song, so why not compare them all head to head? They are all Showdown veterans, and have quite possibly all faced off against one another in one shape or form. To add a new twist in the plot, Gerald Ko is actually in Jason Chen’s video too, supplying the music via the six-string. Whodathunkit?

Alright, let’s be honest. These votes don’t technically qualify whose cover is better than the others. There are no official metrics or algorithms in use here. If one artist’s rendition appealed more to you than the others… go ahead and vote for it. After all, the artist with the most wins walks away with an awesome prize… bragging rights. Very, very modest bragging rights. Maybe?

Vote, baby, vote!

The Remixed Electro-Pop Songs Youtube Round-Up – 3/7/12

We’re still catching up on the ever growing list of covers and remixes that we come our way everyday, but the common theme among this post’s videos is the fact that they are all dance/electronica/pop related in their original forms. We’ve got everything from the dubstep vibes of Skrillex to the dance influenced stylings of Kelly Clarkson’s more recent single. While some have retained some resemblance to the originals, most have been flipped in a pretty drastic way.

The Whitney Houston Tribute Covers Youtube Round-Up 2/23/12

With the unfortunate passing of iconic singer Whitney Houston a couple weeks back, it’s expected to see tribute covers pop up online. Her influence over nearly every singer is undeniable as she was a voice for an entire generation of vocalists. This collection of covers by our artists are all done in her honor, with many choosing to tackle her perhaps most famous song – ” Will Always Love You”. RIP Whitney.

The Massive Remix MV Youtube Round-Up – 2/16/12

This could be our biggest round-up yet. We’ve got more music videos of covers and remixes for you, so no one-take-sessions or studio sessions here. These are those Youtube videos where the audio and video were done at different times, requiring that much more work to bring you just a few minutes of entertainment a piece. So if you’ve got some time to kill, go through this playlist of 14 (yes, FOURTEEN) MVs across various genres. Which ones are your favorites?

Yongie Phresh x Andrew Ha Remix “Lotus Flower Bomb” by Wale x Miguel

Krystle Cruz x Alex DeGuzman Cover “Marvin’s Room” by Drake

The Stringed-Instruments Youtube Round-Up – 1/12/12

OK, you may want to get some popcorn because this round-up is gigantic. How does a baker’s dozen worth of cover videos, all featuring a stringed instrument, sound? The vast majority of these videos are guitar driven but we have a couple surprises in there including a violin and a mandolin. Yea… we went there. So get your fill of the unplugged variety because the next round-up is going to be a little more Hippity Hoppity related.

Kaile Goh Covers “Perfect” by Pink

Just ‘Cause: The Jubilee Project Presents “Be the Change”

The great folks at the Jubilee Project always tends to put together great videos, focusing on amazing themes and causes. Their latest project puts some of our favorite artists and Youtube stars on the spot, asking them what is important to them and what they would like to see change and happen in this world. There is a ton of talent in this clip, and it encourages you to join the conversation – perhaps in the hope that once we talk about it, we just might be able to take the next step and do something about it.

For the new year, The Jubilee Project took some time to interview some YT friends about the changes that they would like to see in the world. We really believe that life is a gift and ordinary people can do extraordinary things. We hope that this video encourages you to live life to the fullest this year and be the change you want to see in the world.

Twitter us @jubileeproject with your responses #BetheChange – What is one thing you’d like to see changed in the world? What is one organization/cause you feel strongly about? What would you do if you had one last day to live?

Special thanks to BU CSA Takeout and all of the YT stars that took part in this video.
