And here it is. The official debut single and video for the “Girl From Around the Way”, rookie Korean pop star by way of New Jersey, Amy “Ailee” Lee. We’ve seen her blossom from a talented teenage powerhouse from TnB (pre-MUzO) to a bonafide star and we couldn’t be happier for the girl. Let’s hope her career has the longevity it deserves and that she’ll make her way back to the domestic market soon, congrats Ailee!

We’re not a K-Pop blog, but when we see one of our artists make headway in any music industry, whether it be domestically or abroad, we can’t help but be excited. So you’ll have to excuse us if we sound overly enthusiastic to announce that New Jersey’s own Ailee is finally about to release her debut single since getting signed in Korea and dropping jaws with her talent last fall. The song is called Heaven, and below you will find the MV teaser. It’s set to drop February 9th, and although it’s only a 30 second clip, we’re more than optimistic about this release.

Two Cents: GT’s Top 10 Performance Clips from 2011

OK. One week down in 2012, and 51 one left to go! We’re continuing our 2011 countdown series with a recap of my top 10 favorite performance clips from last year. The criteria for this list came down to a mixture factors, including the actual performance, the crowd response, production values, and sheer overall entertainment. The only other restriction was that the clip had to be released in the calendar year of 2011, even if the performance is from earlier. Lastly, click through till the end for a bonus pick that didn’t quite fit in my top 10 but shouldn’t be ignored.

Now, starting with my number 10 pick, we have…

10. April Chase – “All You Need to Say” (article)

Ever since first discovering April Chase a couple years ago, they quickly became one of my favorite Pop/Rock bands. The group encompasses radio friendly hooks with a great rock foundation, wrapped up with Carina Valdes’ sweet but gutsy vocals. The only thing the above clip that is missing, was an audience to appreciate the unplugged rendition of “All You Need to Say” from their EP, Still Breathing. It’s always a blessing when a rock group still sounds just as fun and engaging without the benefit of studio polish.

Passport: Ailee Cast in South Korea’s “Dream High 2″ Drama Series

It’s been revealed that the budding KPOP via way of Jersey, Ailee, has joined the cast of Dream High 2 – the follow up to the popular teen drama series in South Korea. The show is notable for casting popular singers and musicians as main characters and the second iteration is set to debut in late January of next year. The R&B/Pop singer has received a ton of interest ever since her appearance on a televised singing competition earlier this year.

Passport: Ailee Destroys the Competition on Korean Music Show

Oof. I’m sure you knew Ailee could sing but have you ever seen her do it on a national television program that was broadcast to millions? Because that’s exactly what happened on a South Korean TV segment called ‘Singer & Trainee’ where she teamed up with veteran R&B singer Wheesung – whom even he was out-sung by her to be quite frank. In fact, she quickly became one of the top searches in Korean search engines after the show aired. Think ‘Singer & Trainee’ as something vaguely similar to the premise of NBC’s The Voice. Anyway, I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from the girl! We were happy to know she was making moves over there, now we’re elated to hear and see it too.

Just ‘Cause: LX Keem’s Fan MV for Decipher x Ailee’s “Catch Me If You Can”

Dumb isn’t the only artist with creative fans that like to whip up their renditions of music videos. You may recall at the top of the year when we shared a little interlude video made by LX Keem set to Decipher & Ailee‘s “Catch Me If You Can“. Well now that De dropped The Sound Effect it’s become a lot easier to remix his last album and that’s precisely what LX did. He’s returned with a full-blown production including a newly completed remix along with a sick accompanying mash-up/machinima music video. Someone needs to book LX for their next audio & visuals.

Ailee Reportedly Signs Deal in Korea

Details are a bit sparse at the moment but word coming out of the Asian peninsula of South Korea is that the very talented Ailee has signed some type of deal over there. She’s been abroad since last year and has been working hard to make inroads into the industry, and it looks like things may be looking up. No details as to what label or in what capacity but no matter a-Tunes extends a HUGE congratulations to her! It’s a well deserved milestone and just the start of great things to come.

Critic’s Corner: Decipher – The Effect

It’s been years since we’ve seen a full-length LP from Philadelphia rapper Decipher. Sure, we’ve seen a couple mixtapes from him along with a plethora of feature spots on other artists’ songs but those aren’t enough to truly gauge how an artist has evolved over time compared to an actual, conceptualized album. But this changed at the top of 2011, when Decipher dropped his long awaited return, The Effect. The MUzO artist did a good job of building anticipation for the album, but does it live up to the hype? We’re gonna find out.

From what I’ve seen, Decipher has historically been at the top of the list in terms of lyrical ability. But where he often faltered was with his beat selection and difficulty bridging the gap between the mainstream and hip-hop purists. Listening to this album, it appears he’s solved both of these issues, finding the middle ground and making use of some very solid instrumental choices. The opener “The Introduction” exemplifies this with sweeping, anthem-like production and non-stop rhymes filled with more quotables than a Rev Run twitter stream. He continues the lyrical assault on songs like “I’m Ready“, assisted by Dumbfoundead & Jay Park (who was the weakest link of the track) and “Another Level” featuring the oh-so-consistent flow of JL.

But Decipher isn’t afraid to get personal either, sharing a little bit about his life experiences on “Pick Me Up” and “Life“, the latter featuring a strong tag-team back and forth with Lyricks. Not content at letting the pen stop there, he goes on to tackle some more socially complex topics in “Angry Asian Man” (yes, indeeed inspired by the the blogger Phil Yu). AAM is one of my personal favorites on the album featuring an awesome instrumental and one of the hungriest verses I’ve ever heard from Manifest; Zo’s scratches was the icing on the cake.

Suffice to say, De still finds a way to satiate his more casual fans, providing incredibly infectious tunes such as “Beauty Queen” featuring LA’s Schoolboy DUKE without sacrificing lyrical technique. The line “take our relationship to the max, we Zack and Kelly” kills me every time! He’s also got some lady-killers on here, most notably “I Wanna Be” – a song boosted by the buttery smooth vocals of Andrew Choi. And of course we can’t forget the main single off the album “Catch Me If You Can“. If theres such a thing as the perfect storm in Hip-Hop, containing cross-over appeal, lyrical prowess, and enjoyability… this would be it. DC delivers his lines with tenacity over one of the dirtiest beats I’ve heard in a long time while Ailee absolutely demolishes the hook, and throws in her own rap verse to boot. Who the deuce expected that!?

That’s not to say every track on the album was good. Err.. wait actually every track on the album was good. Sure, some aren’t quite as strong as the best but when listening through I didn’t hit the skip button once. With any given album, there is always room for improvement but this release makes it awfully hard to find. It appears he’s finally figured out the perfect balance in his craft, effortleslly switching up styles but always retaining his signature wit and abilities. Here at a-Tunes, we’ve tended to give out middling to good ratings in our reviews but this is one release where we are proud to award our very first perfect score. I dunno about you, but I really enjoy Decipher x Ailee’s “Catch Me If You Can“, and it looks like I’m definitely not the only one. One of the their fans decided to take it upon themselves and make a short video interlude by completely flipping the song and putting it to some crazy visuals. The man behind the project, LX Keem, did some impressive work. It’d be dope to see an official project together with everyone involved! What do you guys think?
