Critic’s Corner: Decipher – The Effect
It’s been years since we’ve seen a full-length LP from Philadelphia rapper Decipher. Sure, we’ve seen a couple mixtapes from him along with a plethora of feature spots on other artists’ songs but those aren’t enough to truly gauge how an artist has evolved over time compared to an actual, conceptualized album. But this changed at the top of 2011, when Decipher dropped his long awaited return, The Effect. The MUzO artist did a good job of building anticipation for the album, but does it live up to the hype? We’re gonna find out.
Decipher Releases The Effect Album
Decipher has dropped his latest solo album, The Effect, of which we’ve heard a couple of tracks from so far. The album features Dumbfoundead, Lyricks, DJ Zo, Jay Park, Furis, JL, Andrew Choi, Manifest, Schoolboy DUKE, Ailee and Sam Ock. The album is currently available digitally from Bandcamp and as a CD from his big cartel store. Look for it to be released soon on iTunes and AmazonMP3 as well. You can stream the whole release via the widget below. Start the new year off right with some fresh hip-hop!
Decipher Drops The Cause Mixtape [Free DL]

With anticipation building for Decipher’s next full length album, he’s gone ahead and dropped a mixtape to keep the fans satiated. It includes a lot of old work and some never before heard material. To say it’s jam packed is an understatement, where else you gonna find a release with 43 tracks? Of course, there are features from some of the usual suspects including Shogunna, Andrew Choi, Chan, Ailee, Manifest, Johnnyphlo, Rousseau and more! It’s a free DL so don’t sleep!
Check out what he had to say about the release along with the full tracklist after the break.
[Free DL] Decipher Releases “Catch Me If You Can” ft Ailee & Tracklist for The Effect
Uhhh… it’s official, Decipher’s a problem. It’s been quite some time since he dropped an official single but his comeback song “Catch Me If You Can” only proves the guy hasn’t lost a step. I’m being completely honest when I say this is one of the strongest hip-hop singles I’ve had the opportunity to share with you on a-Tunes all year. Of course Ailee kills it on the hook, but she also kills it on the closing rap verse. What? Ailee, spitting? You read that right folks. You gotta hear it to believe it; who could have guess that!? The song is a free DL.
In related news, De has released the official tracklist to The Effect, his next full length album featuring the above single. I guess great talent enjoys like company because you got features from Dumbfoundead, Jay Park, Lyricks, Furis, JL, Andrew Choi, Manifest, DJ Zo, Schoolboy DUKE, Sam Ock and of course Ailee as you already heard. Ri-effing-diculous.

Showtime: Project Korea III @ Rutgers University – 4/3/2010

Hey folks, so I know it’s been a few weeks since the Project Korea III event featuring Clara Chung, Decipher, Johnnyphlo, Ailee, and Art of Movement went down but we didn’t want to leave you guys hanging without a recap (in case you haven’t read about the event already). We had some pictures and footage to share but quite frankly none of it came close to the quality of the photos and videos put out by the folks of AllKPOP, one of the major sponsors of the show. So just as a disclaimer, all visual multimedia content we are using here was actually captured by AKP. However, any editorial content presented (TEXT) reflect my opinions and thoughts and do not necessarily reflect those of AKP. Just thought we’d clear that up.

WTF: Organic Thoughts – The Purest Form
Welcome to another edition of Weekly Thursday Freebie!
Back in 2004 the hip-hop group Organic Thoughts released the album The Purest Form and helped become one of the first Asian rap groups to get major distribution (I picked up my copy from the local Best Buy). The group has gone through some member changes and seem to be on an indefinite hiatus. At the time of this album, the members were Diwrekt, Fraze, Onpoynt, Reason, and El Gambina (an ill femcee), but also heavily featured Illmind and Tonio.
I wouldn’t consider the album a “classic” but I will say it’s pretty strong. But more than anything it’s influential and something of a trailblazer for AA hip-hop. The album has some great features including the legendary Large Professor. Organized Konfusion, Uniq, Chan, Eyesoulated Mindz, the Mountain Brothers, and Andrew Choi were also present and representing.
It’s a pretty jam packed release, and I recommend you check out this piece of AA music history. It may still be available on iTunes, and if it is and you’re feeling it, I encourage you to purchase it, or at least the tracks you’re digging.
Anyway, track list and link are after the break!
WTF: Andrew Choi x Reena – Misery
For this edition of WTF I thought we could go back few years, when an indie label called Soul’d Out existed and was based out of the NY area. The label consisted of Andrew Choi, Reena, Francesca, and a band called The Ides (formerly known as Groove Therapy).
I’m not really too sure what happened to all the members of the label after they all disbanded, although I do know Andrew Choi is still doin his thing in NY, albeit under the radar. But regardless, I thought it would be worth it to share one of my favorite tracks from that time, entitled ‘Misery’. It features Andrew Choi & Reena on the vocals, backed by The Ides.
Here is a clip of them performing it live.
They are fantastic artists and hope to hear more from all of them again in the future. Good music never dies.
