Critic’s Corner: Johnnyphlo – Basic Strategy

Although Johnnyphlo debuted with a mini-album last year entitled The Notebook, he is making his first feature length album debut with his latest release, Basic Strategy. His mini-album was a very strong, albeit short, collection of songs that showed a lot of potential and promise for the relatively new artist. Though he’s spent a lot of time behind the scenes in music, only in more recent years has he stepped into the spotlight and he’s really had a strong start to his career since then. With the release of this album, the biggest question to be answered was whether he could sustain the quick pace of his artistic growth and development or would his progression stagnate? Looking at the track listing it’s clear that Johnny’s enlisted the help of a lot of other artists so let’s jump right in and see if all the work and collaboration paid off. Note: The album includes a couple re-releases from The Notebook, which I will not include in this review since I commented on them in the last one.

Johnnyphlo Shares and Translates 내 안에 있으니 [03.03.09]

For those of you who’ve picked up a copy of Basic Strategy, Johnnyphlo’s debut full length album, you may have heard the song 내 안에 있으니 [03.03.09] produced by Sam Ock. If you understand Korean, you should already have a pretty good idea what the track’s about. If you haven’t had the opportunity to pick up the album and/or you don’t understand Korean then you may be interested in hearing the story behind the track.

In a short but poignant blog post Johnnyphlo wrote the following:

Exactly a year ago (March 2, 2009 in America, March 3, 2009 in Korea), I lost my best friend.

Miss you, dad.

This song is the narrative of his father’s passing and how he’s dealt with the loss of family. He’s provided the English translation in the following video. This is one of my favorite tracks from his album, certainly not because of the subject matter but because it’s so bone chilling real and honest. It’s hard to know exactly what Johnnyphlo went through but this track gives you a glimpse.

RIP to his father and much love and respect to JP and his family.

Johnnyphlo Audio Interview w/ Maypang-Amin

Maypang-Amin was able to attend Johnnyphlo’s Album Release party and had the opportunity to sit down with him and chat for a few minutes. They talk about his new album, what he’s tryna do with his music, and why he’s doing it. It’s a pretty in depth interview so make sure you give it a listen!

Recently, I had to the opportunity to attend the release party of Korean-American music artist, Johnny Phlo.

The turn out of the event was such a success! Everyone had to have had a good time and if they didn’t, they’re just plain out crazy!

Johnny Phlo, along with music artists Decipher and Ailee, were present at the event and stunned us with awesome performances, singing songs from Johnny’s new album, “Basic Strategy.” Johnny and Decipher also graced us with their own version of Wonder Girl’s “Nobody,” swooning the ladies in the audience with roses. Johnny and Ailee ended the show with their newly released single, “Rollercoaster,” which made everyone get up and dance.

One thing I do have to say about the event promoted by MuZo Entertainment and Allkpop is they really know how to take care of their people. I’m sure preparations for the event were frustrating and difficult, but they kept their cool and went about with what they had to do. Hence, the good turnout of the party.

AMIN thanks Muzo and Allkpop for giving us the opportunity to attend this event and we look forward to more of their events in the future.

Johnnyphlo’s “Basic Strategy” Album Officially Released

After thanking all his supporters at his album released party, Johnnyphlo goes on to announce that his debut full-length album ‘Basic Strategy‘ has been officially released today.

The album is on sale for $10 via paypal but 50% of the proceeds will go towards the relief efforts in Haiti. It will also be available via different online retailers in the near future.

Like I explain in the video blog, I’m going to donate 50% of my sales to Haiti. I’ve never been the type to really go out of my way to help the others around the world. I was always caught up in my own life and lives of those around me that I never bothered to look around to help those that’s really, really in need. With everything that’s happened for me for the past year or so, I just feel so blessed and felt like it was only right to give it back to the world, no matter how small it may be. Also to be honest, I did feel like it will motivate some of you to purchase the album to support the cause. It ain’t about the money. It’s more important to me that you listen to my music and I hope you can feel better knowing that part of what you pay for will go to help those in need!

If the album is as strong as the singles he’s dropped so far, it should be a great listen. We’ll have a review for you as well soon.

Johnnyphlo x Ailee Release New Single – ‘Rollercoaster’

Well I’ll be… NJ based rapper Johnnyphlo has teamed up with his long time colleague Ailee and crafted one helluva track. Sure it’s poppy but after just a couple listens I can’t get this one outta my head. It’s definitely a recommended listen.

And Ailee killed it on the hook. Oof, that girl can sing!

‘Rollercoaster’ is the lead single off his upcoming album ‘Basic Strategy‘ which drops one week from today, January 19th, 2010! If this song is any indication of what’s to come, then I’m definitely looking forward to that release.

Johnnyphlo Announces Album Release Date & Cover

Johnnyphlo’s has just announced the release date for his upcoming debut full-length album ‘Basic Strategy’. It’s all set to drop January 19th, 2010, nearly a year after the release of his mini-album ‘The Notebook‘. This time around he’s collaborated with a list of artists that reads like who’s who of all the top Asian American talent.

We’ve been informed that Ailee, Decipher, DJ Zo, EXP (aka Explicit Linez), James Ha, JL, Lyricks, Manifest, Sam Ock, Schoolboy DUKE, Shogunna, and Viruss 44 are all on the album! A couple of the tracks have been released already like ‘One of the Best‘ and ‘‘Too Late‘ but it seems like there’s a lot more to look forward to.

JP is also holding an album release party in NY, so if you’re in the area you can find out more details at his site.
