The “I Won’t Give Up” Youtube Cover Round-Up – 1/19/12

Normally we’d hold a showdown when so many artists cover the same song, but everyone involved this time around has been in the ring many times before, so we figured we’d hold off for this one. The song of the hour seems to be “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz, and I can understand why – it’s a heartfelt tune from a beloved artist who hasn’t had new material in a while. So, the question is how do some of our artists compare? I’ll let you form your own opinion but my favorite of the bunch is easily Clara’s rendition. Switching from guitar to piano was a brilliant move.

David Choi Tries His Hand at Dubstep with “Knives in Your Ears”

DC is one those musicians who producers, mixes, writes, sings, and pretty much does it all. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he would dabble with other genres of music – a perfect example being his attempt at a little dubstep – the delicately titled “Knives in Your Ears”. It’s a little rough around the edges, though it’s a fair first attempt.  I doubt he’ll be steering too far from the singer/songwriter lane anytime soon though.

afterschoolspecial x The Dreamlapse Project Debut MV for “Dreamers”

Now this is a pretty cool watch. Sometimes good things take time to come to fruition. Such is the case with the music video to “Dreamers” from afterschoolspecial‘s album, It’s All In Your Head. For this music video, they enlisted the new “it” team of the moment, The Dreamlapse Project to create a fun visual in the first person format a la Prodigy. And to help with the project, they’ve gotten everyone to make a cameo and join along for the ride. When I say everyone, I mean everyone. Check out the notes after the video below for the complete list of talent as well as a link to the BTS post.

Thanks so much to Daniel and Scott from The Dreamlapse Project for partnering up on this music video. We first started talking about this project almost a year ago, and to see it finally come together with the finished project is a beautiful thing. They really went above and beyond to get this video done so high five to them. Also a HUGE thanks to everyone who made a cameo in the video. Thanks for giving of your time to take part in what i see as such a community collaboration. Inspiring. Cathy Nguyen, Aj Rafael, David Choi, Jason Chen, Jennifer Chung, Joseph Vincent, Toestah, Arika Sato, Kevin Lien, Dawen, Paul Dateh, Andi Terada, Geo and Chuck of Instant Noodles Crew, Wong Fu Productions, and Ryan Higa. Another important note is this video is that NONE of this would be possible without the backing and work of afterschoolspecial who need their due credit- Jaylen Green, Keane Aranita, Todd Olson, Brian Figueroa, and Victor Velasquez.

David Choi Shooting MV for “Missing Piece” with Ellen Wong & Directed by Ross Ching

It’s been unveiled that David Choi is in the process of shooting the music video for “Missing Piece” off his most recent album Forever and Ever. What is especially interesting is that Ellen Wong (Knives Chau from Scott Pilgrim) is starring and the project is directed by Ross Ching (directed for Kina, Clara C, AJ, etc). We can’t wait to see the final cut when it drops!

Worst Ever: Forever 21 Plagiarizes David Choi’s Lyrics

You’ll have to grant us a late pass for this one, but we still found it worth sharing. Audrey Mag broke the news that Forever 21 had printed lyrics from David Choi‘s song, “That Girl“, onto some of their apparel without authorization or even credit. Choi had the following comment for AM:

“I’m disappointed that Forever 21 [because I felt] like they didn’t have to ask permission to use my lyrics in their commercial product, but I’m also flattered at the same time”

I can certainly understand his mixed reaction but in the end I still view this as a huge gaffe on Forever 21′s behalf – and deem it a shame that David was both disrespected and short-changed by the company. That’s not to say this is the first time this type of situation has happened to the Youtube star, as he’s found his music being used without proper licensing in several TV programs that aired in South Korea.

Now, let me go ahead and say I have no idea if the situation has been rectified or whether or not the merchandise is still for available for sale – but at the end of the day someone at the clothing chain dropped the ball, regardless of intention. Not only were they profiting of his work, but they didn’t even give him the credit he deserves as the author of those words. The use of his work is kind of a back-handed compliment; recognition without proper compensation.
