[Single Release] GT x Johnnyphlo x J. Han x Jae Jin – “Speaking Up”

Our very own GT has taken off the blogger hat for just a moment and returned to his roots to drop a new single about faith called “Speaking Up”. The song features three other gentleman that you may know by the name of Johnnyphlo, J. Han (of AMP fame), with singer Jae Jin contributing the chorus. Interestingly enough, the song was reportedly completed some time ago and is just now seeing the light of day. This song is from a mixtape called GT & Friends that should drop later this year. And for those paying attention, the four remixed Bone Thugs-n-Harmony’s 2007 song “I Tried” which is why it may sound familiar. Support Mr. GT & crew and download the song now for free from bandcamp!

Lastly, here are the lyrics!!

WTF: GT – In Transition Mixtape (2008)

OK, so when a-Tunes was first started I made a promise to myself to never use this platform as shameless promotion for my own music and to use it an impartial manner as I would for any other artist that we support here. With that said I looked at today’s date… April 8th, 2010 and realized wow, it’s been exactly two years since I dropped my debut mixtape In Transition. I’m sure the vast majority of you are unfamiliar with my work, which is understandable but considering that it’s the two year anniversary of this project I thought it’d be appropriate to share with you all for this Week’s Thursday Freebie.

Front Cover

The mixtape was recorded all throughout my college years  and for about a year afterwards as well. As you can imagine from the lengthy time frame there’s going to be a wide range in quality and growth on this project, it was all a matter of transition, hence the title. The tape features guest appearances from Albee, RK, Shinobi, Jacqueline Chun, DCho, and Kato along with some behind the scenes help from Jinny Kim, Johnnyphlo & Kevin Hotography. For what it’s worth, I felt like I grew a lot as a person and artist during the duration of this mixtape, and I also feel like I’ve grown a lot more since. Love it or hate it I present to you In Transition, happy two years old!

Just ‘Cause: GT & Friends – Cali Days

Remember how I went on vacation last month? Well in case you were bored and had 20 min to kill here’s a video highlighting the events of the trip. Don’t ask why I used pandora.tv. Long story short, I used some songs that WMG threw a fit over and as a result the video was rejected by youtube & veoh among others. So this was my workaround.

Check out what went down on our vacation as we hit up San Francisco, drive down the coast of California, chill in LA and wrap it all up in San Diego.

Featuring music by:
Tomoyasu Hotei – “Battle Without Honor or Humanity”
Jay Sean ft. Lil’ Wayne – “Down”
Israel Kamakawiwo’ole – “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World”
Daphne Loves Derby – “Hammers & Hearts”.The Far East Movement ft. Storm – “A Beautiful Day”
Magnetic North – “Drift Away”
Gifted Thought ft. Shinobi – “Take Me Away”

Oh yea, I’ve also relaunched my personal website in case any of you were interested. Hit me up at giftedthought.com.

Two Cents: Apathy Killed the Asian American Star

So I decided to give vlogging a try and I realized I talk WAY too much. I apologize for being so verbose, I’ll work on it for the future =).

Anyways, the point of the video is this: Support the music you love, because we, the consumer can shape the market for Asian American musicians.

Here are the articles I referred to:

Hope I didn’t bore you to death! Thoughts? Comments?

aTunes News: GT x MTV Iggy

Hey everyone. Just wanted to make a quick announcement. I’ve been asked to guest blog for a little while for none other than MTV Iggy! This won’t affect a-Tunes in the least bit since much of what I write here will also be posted over there but there will be occasions where I will write something for Iggy that won’t be posted on a-Tunes and vice versa.

Anyways I’ve already made my first post over there (a repost of our most recent Two Cents feature) and look forward to this joint venture! If you wanna follow my posts at Iggy you can always use this link: http://blog.mtviggy.com/author/gt/ but I also recommend you check out the other great writers as well.

Anyways, thanks for your continued support towards myself, a-Tunes, MTV Iggy, and most of all the artists.

Critic’s Corner: Johnnyphlo – The Notebook

Johnnyphlo is someone who has come a long way in a very short amount of time. Just a couple years ago he was known more as someone who spent his time behind the scenes as a manager and engineer for many Asian-American artists. However now he has decided to step out on his own and show what he has to offer. With his official debut single “White Lie”  released just about a month ago, JP has shown signs that he has the drive and talent to make some great music and caught a lot of people’s attention.  So the question is how does his first mini-album release hold up to the hype?

Let’s find out after the break.

*Disclaimer: I know Johnnyphlo personally and am also on one of the tracks. Despite this I do what I can to stay objective and fair in my reviews. There aint no Benzino and The Source drama here.

Support JohnnyPhlo at the Chuseok Festival: JYP Audition

He has gotten through two rounds of auditions and the final round involves him performing at the Annual Chuseok Festival infront of a large crowd. As one of 12 finalists he is competing for a record contract with JYP Entertainment, home to Wonder Girls, Lim Jeong Hee, Min, and G-Soul.
