The folks behind the Home:Word album, Magnetic North & Taiyo Na have finally put out the music video to their song “I Got My” featuring Jin. But I doubt you’re ready for what you’re about to see as the crew has dug deep and reached out to all their contacts, friends, affiliates, etc to be a part of this MV. There are cameos from the Blue Scholars, Denizen Kane, Conchita Campos, DFD, Christina Chung, FM, Thomas Apartment, James Ha, Vienna Teng, DanAKADan, El Gambina, Cynthia Lin, Dawen, Bambu, DJ Phatrick, Kiwi, Heather Park, Vudoo, Lyrics, Manifest, Alfa, AJ Rafael, Jay Legaspi and a whole lot more. Those are just some of the musicians, there are a ton of activists, media folk, dancers, artists, students, educators, and more who also had a role. This is easily one of the dopest concepts put to music and unifying MV’s I’ve seen all year. Great release.

Hey folks, so I know it’s been a few weeks since the Project Korea III event featuring Clara Chung, Decipher, Johnnyphlo, Ailee, and Art of Movement went down but we didn’t want to leave you guys hanging without a recap (in case you haven’t read about the event already). We had some pictures and footage to share but quite frankly none of it came close to the quality of the photos and videos put out by the folks of AllKPOP, one of the major sponsors of the show. So just as a disclaimer, all visual multimedia content we are using here was actually captured by AKP. However, any editorial content presented (TEXT) reflect my opinions and thoughts and do not necessarily reflect those of AKP. Just thought we’d clear that up.

Continue reading about Project Korea III after the break!

Project Korea is a yearly cultural night event presented by the Korean Student Association of Rutgers. 2010 saw PK come to it’s third iteration, seeing substantial growth in it’s scope and scale. Most notably, this year’s festivities doubled as the highly anticipated return of ex-KPOP star Jaebeom, aka Jay Park, in his first public appearance since splitting from the JYPE pop group 2PM. Jay, along with Junior, Dialtone, and Cha Cha (some of his teammates from Art of Movement, his Seattle based B-boy crew) were booked as the headlining musical act. The opening performance billing was no slouch either with southern California based and recent Kollaboraiton 2010 winner Clara Chung booked to perform along with the more local line-up of Decipher, Johnnyphlo, and Ailee. So clearly there were some big names and big talent slated for this show. The other major component besides the music numbers was an actual musical play put on by the Rutgers KSA. The event reportedly sold out in just a couple days making it very clear that this was a highly anticipated event.

On the day of the show, some eager fans lined up as early as 7AM to make sure they get the best seats, camping outside the on-campus venue. I met up with fellow AA focused website AAtheory before the show and by the time we had arrived about 45 minutes before the doors opened, there was already a substantial line snaking around the courtyard adjacent to the building. There was a pretty big buzz of excitement full of audience members of all ages though I would say the demographics leaned more towards the female youth variety. Make no mistake, it was very clear based on the ambient conversations that many of those in attendance were primarily there to see Jay.

Full House

We were shuffled into the auditorium around 7PM, and indeed the house was packed. All 750ish seats were taken. Things kicked off with a replaying of the event trailer, briefly previewing the musical play along with the musical acts. Each artist was show on screen and triggered substantial applause but when Art of Movement and Jay Park were displayed, the room was instantly engulfed in hysterical female screams. A tiresome pattern that would be repeated many times throughout the evening. The emcees made their way to the stage welcoming the crowd and proceeded to introduce First Light, a Christian acapella group from Rutgers. They sang both the Korean and US national anthems quite well. We were then given a traditional Korean dance presentation courtesy of a local dance troupe made up of elementary school girls.

Korean Folk Dance

Afterwards, we dove into the first main event of the night, the musical play. Loosely based on the Korean drama Goong, with a twist of other popular shows as well. The general plot was that a Korean-American college student had been arranged to marry the prince of South Korea due to a pact made by both individual’s parents before their births. She is suddenly uprooted from her normal life and thrust into learning the ins and outs of becoming royalty. Drama ensues when she encounters difficulty acclimating to her surroundings and and a less then welcome reception by her new husband. She finds comfort in the arms of another man, revealed to be the prince’s cousin, who harbors unspoken jealousy and resentment for the fact that he is not in line for the throne. By the end of it all, the princess realizes the cousin’s less than altruistic intentions and ends up reconciling with the prince, who also has a change of heart and begins to openly accept his new bride and role as head of the dynasty. As previously mentioned, the entire production was set as a musical, with numerous interjections of KPOP songs and dances used to propel the story forward. Throughout the show, songs by Brown Eyed Girls, T-ara, SNSD, Taeyang, and more were used. For a group of volunteers and non-professional actors, the play was fairly entertaining with both high and low moments. The roughest part of the entire thing was the pacing, with 8 Chapters to go through, some scenes definitely lasted longer than they needed to, causing the entire musical to clock in at roughly an hour and a half. Ambitious but a bit superfluous.

Prince & Princess

Following the play, they jumped straight into the musical numbers with Clara Chung starting things off. She performed brilliantly in her trademark quirky nature. She started with an interesting cover of “Thugz Mansion” by 2pac, then sang a mash up of the Kings of Leon’s hit “Use Somebody” and Colbie Caillat’s “Falling For you” before finishing up with her own originals “Heartstrings” and “Offbeat”. Encouraging audience participation, she showed those of us on the East coast why she deservedly won Kollaboration just a month earlier.

Next up was Philly native Decipher. He switched up the mood and started things off with his hit Lloyd Banks remix track ‘Hyundai Daewoo Kia’. He toned down the energy a tad and followed with his song ‘Where You From’, an ode to his people all over the country, repping different areas. In a complete change of pace, he smoothed it all out with a yet-to-be released slow jam entitled ‘I Wanna Be’ featuring Andrew Choi on the track (but sadly not present for the show). The guy even showed off some of his dance skills during this number. There were a couple technical glitches but De kept it professional and it was on with the show.

Johnnyphlo was the next act, jumping in with his track ‘Too Late’ (featuring James Ha, also absent). In a complete 180, the next song performed was ‘Keep Your Head Up (To The Sky)’, a high energy song of encouragement where he spits double time for the majority of the track. Keeping the energy high, he closed it out with this hit ‘Rollercoaster’, assisted by the very talented R&B diva Ailee, who also broke it down with some dance moves during the bridge. There were some mixing issues, with some distortion present that distracted from the overall performance a bit.

In a very special performance, Johnnyphlo and Ailee was joined back on stage with Decipher and Clara where they performed a remix to the hit Wondergirls song ‘Nobody’, the Rainstone remix. De & JP spit some love raps to a couple of the audience members while the ladies Ailee and Clara held it down on the chorus and bridge. With an awesome exclusive remix, it’s performances like these that make it worth while to attend live events where you would never otherwise see such a collaboration. Listen for the Johnnyphlo line “I ain’t no Jay Park, but you can be my hottest”. The crowd LOVED that line.

Last but not least was Art of Movement. Believe me when I say, when Jay and company walked unto the stage, the crowd erupted into pandemonium. They had so much love for Jay, Dialtone, Cha Cha, and Junior… ESPECIALLY Jay. Every word, movement, interaction this kid did was golden in the eyes of the audience. They actually started things off with several crowd participation activities, asking for volunteers (of which the numbers were plentiful) to go head to head in various goofy activities against each of the AoM members. This included a handstand race, blinking contest, and a game of paper, rock, scissors. The most notable contest was when Jay and a girl had a dance off to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”. At the end of it all, they went into a 10 minute dance routine mixed with freestyle and choreography. No, Jay did perform any vocals, be it rap or song, but kept it strictly dance with his crew. Even though the crowd would have loved them regardless, I do want to say on record AoM is a pretty talented crew. They def held it down.

Although Johnnyphlo debuted with a mini-album last year entitled The Notebook, he is making his first feature length album debut with his latest release, Basic Strategy. His mini-album was a very strong, albeit short, collection of songs that showed a lot of potential and promise for the relatively new artist. Though he’s spent a lot of time behind the scenes in music, only in more recent years has he stepped into the spotlight and he’s really had a strong start to his career since then. With the release of this album, the biggest question to be answered was whether he could sustain the quick pace of his artistic growth and development or would his progression stagnate? Looking at the track listing it’s clear that Johnny’s enlisted the help of a lot of other artists so let’s jump right in and see if all the work and collaboration paid off. Note: The album includes a couple re-releases from The Notebook, which I will not include in this review since I commented on them in the last one.

Basic Strategy ft Viruss 44, EXP, DJ Zo – The title track of the album starts things off with a bang with a bass heavy track that encourages all the artists to go in hard on this one. It looks like a deliberate choice was made to feature other bi-lingual Korean-American emcess as Viruss 44 and EXP both deliver verses following JP’s opener. Everyone gave a solid performance while DJ Zo’s cuts bring it all together brilliantly. I though a lot of great choices were made here.

Too Late ft James Ha – This song was released before the album dropped and it’s as strong a listen now as it was back then. James Ha’s light R&B vocals blend very well with the track and add a great touch. For me, this took a few listens to fully appreciate but I found that it grew on me quickly from there. It’s a smooth song and completely different in tempo and sound from the album opener. The instrumentation is anchored by an acoustic guitar, which really helped the sound stand out.

Rollercoaster ft Ailee – I can already tell you, this is easily the catchiest track on the album. It’s a fun Hip-Pop song and the Johnnyphlo x Ailee combination continues to prove to be a winning forumla. Is this the most lyrical track you’re gonna hear? No. Is it the deepest? Certainly not. But it definitely serves its purpose as a strong commercial single for the album and it’s nearly impossible to get out of your head. At the end of the day this is a great pop song. If there was a platform for it, this would be a sure-fire radio it.

Live Your Life [니 멋대로] – In yet another change of pace, JP decides to try his hand at a Southern style of track. I’ll be completely frank and say it took me a while to get used to this song, simply because I’ve never heard this style from him before. Once I was able to move past my reservations I found the song enjoyable though I wouldn’t say this is one of my favorites. I imagine this would be great live though. While I’m glad the entire album isn’t done in this style I will say it’s a fresh track that adds variety within the context of the project.

One of the Best ft Decipher, Manifest, JL, Lyricks – This is pretty much the definition of a posse cut. MUzO (Johnny, Decipher) goes in on the track with the fellas from The Beautiful Cycle (Manifest, JL, Lyricks). This song was released last summer with an accompanying music video, the only difference being JL was added to the repertoire. I though the original MV version was an incredibly strong track as each MC killed their respective parts though I’m not sure JL added a whole lot to it, which is odd considering how strong his verses typically are. It’s not that his contribution wasn’t well done, rather something about it just felt a little bit out of place. That being said this is one of the best collaborative tracks I’ve heard in quite some time, and though released a year ago, it’s inclusion on the album is still welcome.

Don’t Phase Me – If you ever wondered how JP felt about the various criticisms and opinions that he’s faced, this track aims to shed some light on the very subject. The song has a mellow, almost jazzy influence to it that gives it great sound. The chorus is serviceable, but felt a bit thin in comparison. Lyricks makes his second appearance on the album and his flow is bananas here. In fact, the highlight of the track is probably the smooth, lyrical delivery from both MC’s.

[03.03.2009] – This song starts off with an interlude where Johnnyphlo explains the experience of his Father’s passing before moving on to what is easily the most somber, but moving experience on the album. I thought this was a perfect example of where music transcends language as you can feel the heart and emotions he poured into this song regardless if you understand Korean. In a way, this track makes one view Johnny not solely as an artist or a rapper, but instead as a child who lost a loving parent. Although it’s terrible that this song was based on such a heartbreaking experience, it’s truly helped mold what I consider to be the best track of the album.

Top of the World ft Schoolboy Duke – Once again switching gears, Johnny goes in a more pop-oriented direction, enlisting the help of Schoolboy DUKE for this one. DUKE is a perfect choice for this style of song as he tends to defy genre constraints himself. I have mixed feelings about the final mixdown of this track as DUKE sounded kind of muddy on his sung chorus, but his verse contribution kept things fresh. This is another one that I can enjoy as a one-off, in small doses but can easily grow tired off after too many repeated listens. In short, it’s fun but too stylized for me to completely love.

Just a Friend – Also released as a single last year, this is an enjoyable, light, summer love song. The track also had an accompanying music video. It’s got commercial appeal but is chill enough to enjoy no matter what the mood. Like most of the songs on the album, this track serves a very specific purpose and is another cut that strengthens the LP’s mass appeal. It’s certainly not ground breaking, but a good listen nonetheless.

내 꺼 – Johnny relies heavily on the autotune for the hook and bridge of this song, and it actually worked a lot better than I thought it would. This is another easy-listening song but there isn’t a whole lot about it to set it apart from the rest of the album. I gotta admit though, the chorus melody is pretty catchy. It makes me wonder what could have been if JP had used another artist to fully sing the hook. This cut is a good song but there’s nothing particularly note-worthy about it.

Be ft Shogunna – If I had to choose my favorite beat on the album, this song is it. The bluesy electric guitar adds so much flavor to the song and almost paints a picture on it’s own. JP delivers a Tiger JK-esque performance here, and it suits him and the track as a whole perfectly. Shogunna adds a lot of texture in contrast and really helps anchor the song. This may be one of the most well balanced songs I’ve heard in quite some time. I thought every element complemented each other beautifully. Easily another one of my favorites.

One Day ft Decipher – Ths entire track is pretty much an extended shout-out in rap form. That said I think some will appreciate this song more than others. For anyone that’s invested in or is a fan of the Asian-American music community, this song will serve as an encouragement and fond acknowledgement of the scene and many of it’s major players. If you have little interest about AA music and it’s artist then this one will likely go right over your head.

Once Again ft Sam Ock – Featuring production and vocals by Sam Ock, this is a gorgeously arranged song though it’s certainly not without it’s faults. As JP addresses his struggles in reconciling his spiritual life with his day-to-day life it all comes off a little bit flat. I don’t feel the same emotional connection and comittment to the song as I did in 내 안에 있으니 [03.03.2009], though it could easily be that JP is more connected to one topic over the other. The song is well written and produced but falls short of some his other work in delivering a genuine experience.

Conclusion: The most interesting thing about this album is the fact that I was able to appreciate it in two very distinct ways. There are a handful of choice singles on this album that I absolutely loved, and would throw them into my favorites playlist any day. Conversely, there are some songs on here that I wouldn’t appreciate as much as singles, simply because they may be too stylized or unexpected for my taste. But when heard within the context of the entire album, even those songs become truly enjoyable as they offer a refreshing change of pace by adding variety and flavor into the mix. In fact, if I had to sum up this collection of songs in one word, it would be variety. And believe me, in this case variety is good. One of my main complaints about his mini album was the lack there of and it seems Johnnyphlo had directly addressed that. Some may point out that all the different genres and styles on this album indicate a lack of focus and authenticity but it seems more to me that it’s just a deeper representation of the fact that JP is a multi-faceted artist with diverse tastes. I appreciate the fact that he doesn’t limit himself to one box or label. He certainly made some very smart choices here, and although he pulled of some styles better than others, there is very little that I actually dislike about this album. Genre purists and elitists may want to avoid this release but for anyone else that has an eclectic palate for their music, I highly recommend this one. Now the next test for Johnny will be to see if he can pull it off again, only without the abundance of strong supporting features.

Must Listen: Basic Strategy, Rollercoaster, 내 안에 있으니 [03.03.2009], One of the Best, Be

a-Tunes Score: 9.5/10

Even though James Ha has made the move to Korea, he’s still got time to drop new music. He recorded this track back in the summer but just now released it after being pushed to do so by a family member. It’s a pretty good R&B track, and James sounds real smooth as always. Vandoza spits with a quick flow that switches up the track pretty nicely. I’m liking this one. You too? Great cause you can grab it for free here!

so i made this song in the summer while i was in a very emo state
and was never going to release it…

but my older cousin in korea is sitting next to me and she is forcing me
to upload it RIGHT NOW… HAHAHA so here it is…

“Meant to Be” – James Ha ft. Vandoza

don’t worry i’m ok now^^… everything happens for a reason

o.y. Happy Valentine’s day yahl^^

After thanking all his supporters at his album released party, Johnnyphlo goes on to announce that his debut full-length album ‘Basic Strategy‘ has been officially released today.

The album is on sale for $10 via paypal but 50% of the proceeds will go towards the relief efforts in Haiti. It will also be available via different online retailers in the near future.

Like I explain in the video blog, I’m going to donate 50% of my sales to Haiti. I’ve never been the type to really go out of my way to help the others around the world. I was always caught up in my own life and lives of those around me that I never bothered to look around to help those that’s really, really in need. With everything that’s happened for me for the past year or so, I just feel so blessed and felt like it was only right to give it back to the world, no matter how small it may be. Also to be honest, I did feel like it will motivate some of you to purchase the album to support the cause. It ain’t about the money. It’s more important to me that you listen to my music and I hope you can feel better knowing that part of what you pay for will go to help those in need!

If the album is as strong as the singles he’s dropped so far, it should be a great listen. We’ll have a review for you as well soon.

It’s a pretty cool rendition as James Ha takes AJ Rafael Band’s pop rock hit ‘I Just Want You‘ and turns it into a trippy auto-tuned techno version. I’d like to hear the body beatbox recorded and seperately so its not filtered through auto-tune as well but overall I’d say its a pretty neat remix. James definitely adds a unique flavor to it.

Word has it he’ll be moving overseas soon. Let’s hope the videos and music don’t stop!

I just wonder what’s up with the weird spiderman doll in the closet?

Don’t you love collaborations? Cause we sure do. Johnnyphlo has teamed up with Philly’s James Ha to create a real smooth track entitled ‘Too Late’. After a couple listens I think this is one of those sleeper hits. The melody kind of sticks with you after a while.

Best of all, it’s a free download, so make sure you grab it!

Note: If you pay attention you may notice some additional background vocals from the very talented Ailee. Also some of you may remember them performing this song at the NY Chuseok festival a couple months back.

Lyrics after the jump!

Written by: Johnnyphlo
Produced by: Xubie
Arranged by: Johnnyphlo and Ailee

[Chorus]

[Chorus]

[Chorus]

[Bridge] x2

[Chorus]
