The Youtube Pop Covers Round-Up – 1/27/12
Happy Friday! This is yet another collection of youtube covers, this time around the centralizing genre is Pop. There are some extremely creative visuals here, along with some of the more run-of-the-mill-and-sing-in-front-of-a-webcam varieties, but all in all there’s a little something for everyone. We’ve got tunes from various decades, dating back from the 70′s – so it’s kind of interesting to hear what was and is Pop. Enjoy!

Two Cents: GT’s Top 10 Performance Clips from 2011
OK. One week down in 2012, and 51 one left to go! We’re continuing our 2011 countdown series with a recap of my top 10 favorite performance clips from last year. The criteria for this list came down to a mixture factors, including the actual performance, the crowd response, production values, and sheer overall entertainment. The only other restriction was that the clip had to be released in the calendar year of 2011, even if the performance is from earlier. Lastly, click through till the end for a bonus pick that didn’t quite fit in my top 10 but shouldn’t be ignored.
Now, starting with my number 10 pick, we have…
10. April Chase – “All You Need to Say” (article)
Ever since first discovering April Chase a couple years ago, they quickly became one of my favorite Pop/Rock bands. The group encompasses radio friendly hooks with a great rock foundation, wrapped up with Carina Valdes’ sweet but gutsy vocals. The only thing the above clip that is missing, was an audience to appreciate the unplugged rendition of “All You Need to Say” from their EP, Still Breathing. It’s always a blessing when a rock group still sounds just as fun and engaging without the benefit of studio polish.
Just ‘Cause: Jane Lui Sings For a Young Fan
“Cute” is the only way to describe this video. While on tour in Europe, Jane Lui had a show in Amsterdam but unfortunately she had a young supporter who couldn’t stick around due to the fact that she had school the next day. So guess what? The little girl got her own private performance of “Migration Song”.
AAM had the scoop behind the event:
The way Jane explains it, it was her last night Europe, and kind of a miserable one. She had posted about doing a little open mic show in Amsterdam, but between the pouring rain and coming down with a cold, she was considering not going, thinking no one would know her there anyway.
But Jane, soaked with rain, had fans waiting for her, of course. Including a guy named Edwin who brought his young daughter. They had apparently seen Jane’s awesome History of Lyrics That Aren’t Lyrics, and drove out an hour to see her. But it was almost her bedtime by the time Jane got there, so they went outside and she sang the little fan a quick song.
Too awesome.
Jane Lui Goes Through the “History of Lyrics That Aren’t Lyrics”
Music does’t necessarily have to be lyrical… not by any means. And I’m not referring to instrumentals, I’m still talking about songs with vocals but that often make use of sounds that aren’t exactly part of any language, lexicon or vocabulary. That’s why the genius that is Jane Lui and her team have come up with this incredible mash-up of hits from the past 50ish years of songs that do just that – 26 in total. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m an unabashed Jane fan, and its videos like these that are the exact reasons why.
The Creative Youtube Remixes Round-Up – 9/26/11
Today we chose to showcase some of the more creative covers/remixes we’ve come across in the past couple weeks. Each of the following renditions are different enough from the original – either in arrangement, instrumentation, genre, etc that we thought you shouldn’t miss them. Jane Lui gives an incredible interpretation of “Moves Like Jagger”. One Way takes it back with some interpolation of R&B classics. JV stays a bit more contemporary but mashes up a couple Drake hits on the acoustic 6-string. Laura Song & friends give an intriguing performance powered by iPads. And lastly, Maribelle takes an FM song and changes up the genre – leaving only the beat in tact. Check them all out!

[Cover Video] Dawen x Jane Lui x Gerald Ko Sing Backstreet Boys in Chinese
We’ve started to share most cover videos on our facebook & twitter pages to help de-clutter our blog, but every now and we come across a video we just have to share. Three extremely talented artists, Dawen, Jane Lui, and Gerald Ko put this Chinese translated remix of the 90′s Backstreet Boys hit song “I Want It That Way”. Similar to Dawen’s remix of “Friday”, this song is a very enjoyable and humorous rendition of a well known single. Great stuff.
Jane Lui x Paul Dateh Go Down Memory Lane with Cartoon Medley
The ever so talented Jane Lui and Paul Dateh whipped something different for this video where they revisit some cartoon theme songs from the past and mashed them together in a great little medley. Peep their smooth transition between them on the piano along with the utilization of other instruments like the violin, kazoo & more. Great memories!
Here’s a list of the themes they brought back:
- Inspector Gadget
- Pinky & the Brain
- Pink Panther
- Ducktales
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- The Smurfs
- Animaniacs
- Ghostbusters
