Two can play at that game? What game? I dunno, I just wanted to introduce the concept of two. Deuce. Double. 1+1. Snake Eyes. Duets. Because that’s what we’ve rounded-up for you today. This is all about about two musical artists covering songs both new and old and giving you two subjects to see and hear. This would have been more appropriate for a “Twos”day…. OK, sorry about that. Enjoy!
As a nod to our fans from various nations abroad, we’ve put together yet another collection of international themed covers and remixes. Most are covers of songs from Asian Pop markets, with a couple translated tunes thrown in for good measure. Go ahead and have your pick at the batch, there’s bound to be a listen or two that will catch your fancy.
DANG. OK, I know we don’t really post about a single cover anymore, usually grouping them together in our round-ups instead, but this is one that SHOULD not go unnoticed. David So, together with Paul Kim, Jason Chen & Travis Graham (of New Heights), have formed an unofficial group known as ‘The Runs’ (Check below for the reasoning behind the name). The four of them tackle the classic Boyz II Men song, “On Bended Knee” and they kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllllllt it. Slayed. Destroyed. Annihilated. If you’re a Youtube star, this song is now off limits because you’re not gonna top this.
This is the most random thing that we decided to do. We are the RUNS cause our music will make you shit yourself? LOL!
Concept: David So
Produced, Arranged, and Vocal Produced by: Paul Kim
Engineered and Mixed by: Travis Graham and Jason Chen
As promised, Jason Chen has released the music video for the title song from his album that dropped late last year. Rather than going the customary love story route for this SmashHitta produced song, he and The Dreamlapse Project opted for something a little more supernatural. It’s a nice change of pace and certainly helps it stand out with the aid of some decent special effects. As a obnus, you can catch a director’s cut alternate ending version after the break too!
Thursday feels about right for another round-up, what do you think? We’ve put together a collection of in-studio performance videos where the artists chose to stay in the comfort of their creative environments. R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, and everything in between all have representation in this mix. With 10 videos, I’m positive you’ll find something to enjoy, if not all.
A couple notes:
Sam Tsui kills it again.
I still can’t believe that new Brian McKnight song actually happened
I prefer Gabe’s version of “Strip” to the original
Erika’s cover/flip is on point
David Choi Covers “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction
At first we were considering putting together a Showdownfor “Boyfriend” by the Beebz (since it’s been a while), but after looking at all the covers we’ve compiled we realized it’s just not feasible. Artists seem to love J Beezy just as much as the rest of his fans because we have 9 covers of a month old song – and I’m sure we missed a few along the way. Anyway, if you haven’t hit your “Boyfriend” replay quota yet, then have at it with the following!
Youtube star, Jason Chen, is ramping up to release the music video to the title track from his November 2011 album, Gravity. The half-minute teaser video looks to be on par with the rest of his visual releases, featuring decent video production values with Jason Chen playing the male lead and a pretty female as the love interest. This MV is a joint effort in conjunction with The Dreamlapse Project and is set for a April 27th debut. Check out additional behind the scenes footage after the break.
Welcome to another remix/round-up! This time around, we are revisiting an international theme with all of the songs either remixes/covers/translations of Asian songs, or in one particular case, an English song sung in Chinese. It’s a pretty big melting pot of culture and languages – but that’s fairly representative of the world we live in. Go ahead and take a gander, I’m sure you’ll find something you enjoy in this collection!
Jason Chen shared a quick little preview of an upcoming track called “Autotune”. It’s your expected JC fair – mid-tempo to upbeat, harmless Pop tunage. A million bonus points if you can guess what famous audio filter was used for this song. In the video, it’s stated this song will drop later this year, as the next single to get the big push will be “Gravity”, with it’s impending April release.
It’s been going on a month since our last Showdown feature, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.
The time seems ripe for a new one. For this post, we have a four way battle where all the competitors are singing “Safe and Sound” – a slow, heartfelt country tune by Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars. Kina Grannis, Gerald Ko, Megan Lee, and Jason Chen all had the good fortune of covering this song, so why not compare them all head to head? They are all Showdown veterans, and have quite possibly all faced off against one another in one shape or form. To add a new twist in the plot, Gerald Ko is actually in Jason Chen’s video too, supplying the music via the six-string. Whodathunkit?
Alright, let’s be honest. These votes don’t technically qualify whose cover is better than the others. There are no official metrics or algorithms in use here. If one artist’s rendition appealed more to you than the others… go ahead and vote for it. After all, the artist with the most wins walks away with an awesome prize… bragging rights. Very, very modest bragging rights. Maybe?
