Two Cents: GT’s Top 10 MVs from 2011 (and 10 Honorable Mentions)
2011 was a banner year in the world of Asian-American music. We saw more releases than ever, more artists achieving more mainstream success, and more fans across more ethnic backgrounds recognizing the great music by our artists. But along with more of the good comes more of the bad – with there also being an influx in mediocre music, an increase in hate and bigotry (check Youtube comments) and even more pressure to try and stand out. That’s why I wanted to look back on the past year and choose what I consider to be my top 10 favorite music videos from 2011. Now this doesn’t mean that these are the MVs with the top production values (although this is often the case), but rather it’s a reflection of what I found to be the most well executed, balanced, and entertaining visuals. On the very last page we also have a list of 10 honorable mentions that I thought deserved to be recognized as well.
So without futher ado let’s jump straight into number 10…
10. IAMMEDIC – “Spaceship” (article)
Electronica-Pop group IAMMEDIC took the concept of their song “Spaceship” to the max by injecting a silly Star Trek inspired motif and alien abduction. The video is fun, looks great, and represents the high energy of the audio perfectly. Deep? Not so much, but fun and well executed? Very much so.
Directors/Cinematographers/ Dan Fisher and Ed Park
Produced by Joe Park and IAMMEDIC
Edited by Steve Arcenio
Visual Effects – Ed Park and Derrick Lee
3D Model by Daniel Harris
“Spaceship” Written and Produced by IAMMEDIC
Mixed by Enik Lin
Jason Min Releases the MV for “Something I Said”
The very talented Philly musician by way of LA, Jason Min, has released the music video to the song “Something I Said” off his self-titled EP that was released late last year. The visuals are beautifully shot and the production values are more than adequate – so I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this one. It’s a great pairing to the song, which is one of my favorites off the EP. Check it out below!
Inspire Cali 2011 – October 22nd, Torrance CA

After kicking off the year with an incredible event in the East Coast, Inspire is returning back to their SoCal roots for a new show on October 22nd in Torrance, California. The faith inspired concert features talent from all over the country including AMP, Gowe, Jason Min, The Lawft, Mickey Cho, Descry (of the Nehemiah Band) and more! SoCal folk, I highly encourage you check this one out. This is music for the ears, heart and soul. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.
Jason Min Makes a “Marriage Proposal”
This is real life folks. In this heart warming music video, Jason Min puts together a creative and extensive marriage proposal for the love of his life. I don’t want to spoil the video for you so make sure you check it out yourself. It’s an incredibly sweet video, made all the more epic by the fact that it’s all real. Congrats Jason! We wish you and your future wife nothing but blessings and happiness!
I’m not leaving here without you.

[Video] Documentary on Project Group June (Sam Ock, Jason Min, Elias Yoon, Evan Chapman)
Here’s an interesting 16 minute documentary piece on the project group known as June, comprised of Sam Ock, Jason Min, Elias Yoon, and Evan Chapman. Back in February, the four dropped their debut self titled EP. They are called June to signify the month they initially got together and worked out a ton of music. This documentary video provides some behind the scenes footage interspersed with interview segments to provide additional context. It’s definitely a recommended watch.
Spotlight: The Inspire ’11 Performers (Tim Be Told, Lyricks, AMP, Jason Min, Sarah Kim, Saving Thomas, Jae Jin)
It’s been a long time since our last Spotlight but we’re finally back with some more interviews! Back at the top of 2011, we were honored to be a part of a little event called Inspire – here on the East coast for the first time ever. This is long, long overdue but we wanted to be sure to share the pre-show interviews we had with the artists – Tim Be Told, Lyricks, AMP, Jason Min, Sarah Kim, Saving Thomas, and Jae Jin. You maybe seen some of our past spotlight features on a couple of these artists, but the following clips provide a specific glimpse and context of the heart of these musicians before the event. So without further ado we hope you enjoy the interviews! (For photos, check out the FB album courtesy of Helping Hands & Tom of Meet Inspiration)

This school will service the most needy — orphans and slum children — providing affordable education for them and advancing their educational pursuits.
Since 1999, DYC has been the only community primary school available for these students. But we are excited to construct this secondary school in partnership with DYC and the Lenana community.

Saving Thomas x Decipher x Jason Min Are “Reaching Out”
Philly stand up! Three staples of the AA music scene in the Illadelph have collabed on a new track called “Reaching Out”. You got band Saving Thomas, rapper Decipher and one-man show Jason Min all one track, mixed and mastered courtesy of Andy Ha (Repercussion Studios). Just wanted to share this track with you now, but I’ll have to update with my thoughts on it later after I get a chance to hear it myself.
[update] Just heard the track. I gotta say, I’m a pretty big fan. On paper it’s kind of an odd mix of talent but they all blended together beautifully here and created a pretty great song. Props to everyone involved, this is a winner. [/update]
Sam Ock x Jason Min & Others Form New Project Group – June
Wow. These guys are pretty good at keeping things on the DL, but Sam Ock & Jason Min, along with Elias Yoon and Evan Chapmen have formed a side project group called June, named after the month they got together and cranked out some records. Along with announcing the group, they’ve also gone ahead and dropped their debut EP (self titled). It’s only a few tracks but it’s a great mash up of acoustic styles and creativity. I’m looking forward to letting this one marinate in the playlist for a little while. It’s a free DL so don’t miss out!
