Johnnyphlo & Schoolboy DUKE Remix Jay Park’s “I Want to Cry”

1 Sep

We showed you the teaser a couple days ago but the full version of Johnnyphlo & Schoolboy DUKE’s remix to the Jay Park x Brave Brothas Collab has dropped. Both artists did a great job, I’d put it on par with the original. Even Jay himself gave it the cosign. This isn’t the first time JP & DUKE have linked up and they tend to make a formidable team. The song is a free DL via the bandcamp widget below.

Johnnyphlo x Schoolboy DUKE Preview Remix of Jay Park’s “I Want to Cry”

30 Aug

The wildly popular Jay Park is back in Korea at the moment, making his return to the media scene over there and has already released a new single called “I Want to Cry”.  Well Johnnyphlo & Schoolboy DUKE decided to put together a little remix on the song and have posted up a preview of it. It looks like we should expect a new song and video for the remix in the near future. Sounds promising but it’s too early to tell how it will turn out. Looking forward to it!

Johnnyphlo Releases Remix of Eun Ji Won’s “술김에”

2 Aug

In more Korean-American music news today, Johnnyphlo has dropped a new remix track. He decided to take KPOP artist Eun Ji Won’s “술김에” (roughly translated to “While Buzzed/Drunk”). Like the original, this song has a lot of autotune on it, which I’m usually skeptical of, but Phlo makes it work here – effectively balancing the rap and “sung” parts. This one is available as a free DL as well. Get it here.

I heard Eun Ji Won’s original 술김에 a few months ago and fell in love with it. People ask me what I think of him as a rapper and I tell them that I think he’s talented – so when I heard the original, I was expecting a rap verse but I guess he decided to not to rap on this track. I love remixing K-pop songs and showing what I can do with it. Enjoy the track!

25 Jul

The fellas of MUzO Entertainment were recently featured in a student film documentary. They go into the lives of Johnnyphlo, Decipher and their managers and what they aim to accomplish with their art and craft. They talk about both the music and the business aspects of the grind, providing a glimpse of everything that goes on behind and on the stage. It’s a great watch, make sure you check it out. Look for appearances for from Clara Chung and Ailee.

It’s been a couple month’s since our last Spotlight feature, but we are back with a brand new interview with MUzO Entertainment and Philly native Decipher. Lastly, watch till the end for an exclusive preview of some never heard before material.

Decipher x Johnnyphlo x Ailee Release Remix of “Nobody” By the Wonder Girls

4 Jul

De, JP, and Ailee have been known to perform their rendition of the Wonder Girls hit “Nobody” (the R&B version) live on stage at various events. The song typically evokes a strong, favorable response from the crowd and I’ve been wondering why they never just went ahead and released it online as well. I guess I can’t stop asking because they have finally dropped it and it turned out great. Even though the original song is already a couple years old, I’m digging this version a lot.

Check it out for yourselves! And wooo, Ailee killed it on that bridge. You can DL it for free HERE.

MUzO Ent. Artists Johnnyphlo & Decipher Interviews w/ ChannelAPA

26 Apr

ChannelAPA‘s been keeping busy, dropping interview after interview but check out their latest with Mid-Atlantic based MUzO Entertainment artists Johnnyphlo & Decipher. It’s a great couple of clips that breaks down each artist individually so you know what’s up. Johnny talks about his early motivations with music, his creative process, specific songs, and what it’s like as a bilingual MC. Decipher discusses his musical household and how he’s got love for music as a whole, and not just particular artists or genres, along with working with other artists and what’s to come. Great watches!

Showtime: Project Korea III @ Rutgers University – 4/3/2010

26 Apr

Hey folks, so I know it’s been a few weeks since the Project Korea III event featuring Clara Chung, Decipher, Johnnyphlo, Ailee, and Art of Movement went down but we didn’t want to leave you guys hanging without a recap (in case you haven’t read about the event already). We had some pictures and footage to share but quite frankly none of it came close to the quality of the photos and videos put out by the folks of AllKPOP, one of the major sponsors of the show. So just as a disclaimer, all visual multimedia content we are using here was actually captured by AKP. However, any editorial content presented (TEXT) reflect my opinions and thoughts and do not necessarily reflect those of AKP. Just thought we’d clear that up.

Jin Drops Tribute Song to Asian MC’s – ‘The A-List’

25 Apr

Jin, arguably the most well-known Asian-American MC, decided to drop a track in tribute of all the Asian MC’s he respects that are doing their thing right now. This song is in response to a list that was published by a blogger on their top 10 Greatest Asian MC’s list, where Jin made the cut at #1. It’s encouraging to see Jin give a nod to his fellow colleagues, or as his once famously said in a Freestyle battle “cause Game recognize game”. He spits over the instrumental to Drake’s “It’s Over”.

Here’s the complete list of rapper’s he shouted out on the track. Ill.

Critic’s Corner: Johnnyphlo – Basic Strategy

11 Apr

Although Johnnyphlo debuted with a mini-album last year entitled The Notebook, he is making his first feature length album debut with his latest release, Basic Strategy. His mini-album was a very strong, albeit short, collection of songs that showed a lot of potential and promise for the relatively new artist. Though he’s spent a lot of time behind the scenes in music, only in more recent years has he stepped into the spotlight and he’s really had a strong start to his career since then. With the release of this album, the biggest question to be answered was whether he could sustain the quick pace of his artistic growth and development or would his progression stagnate? Looking at the track listing it’s clear that Johnny’s enlisted the help of a lot of other artists so let’s jump right in and see if all the work and collaboration paid off. Note: The album includes a couple re-releases from The Notebook, which I will not include in this review since I commented on them in the last one.
