The In-Studio Covers Round-Up – 2/6/12

I call this the In-Studio Covers Round-Up because I had one criteria as the unifying theme. If I saw a mic in the video, I classified it as in-studio and threw it in this batch. Simple enough right? Nevermind if it was actually used for the recording, or if it’s just a prop, or whatever else. A few new faces sprinkled with some Youtube cover artist veterans. 10 videos in total. Have fun!

Showdown: On Fire Ent x Rocky Sandoval vs Hopie Spitshard vs Lyricks x Decipher x The Yellow Boyz x JL x Excel Cruz x Koreone x Manifest x Smokes

Welcome to another episode of Showdown, where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better.

With Drake being undoubtedly one of the hottest acts in the business right now, it’s no wonder why his music has been covered and remixed by artists thousands of times over. For this installment of our Showdown series we’ve decided to highlight a few recent remixes of Drake’s song “The Motto” featuring Lil Wayne. This one is a three way battle with On Fire & Rocky in one corner, Hopie repping the fairer sex on her own in another, and a huge mega roster of artists in the last corner – comprised of Lyricks, De, The Yellow Boyz, Excel Cruz, Koreone, Manifest & Smokes. So by all means, go ahead and take a listen to the three renditions and vote for your favorite below!

So who do you think did the track the must justice? The one two punch of On Fire & Rocky? Hopie rocking the mic via webcam? Or the gigantic 10-man lineup from this years’ Asian Hip-Hop Summit tour? Cast your vote now! Why? … Bragging rights? We really don’t have an answer except to say it’s fun!

The Unplugged Youtube Covers Round-Up – 10/7/11

We figure we’d kick off the start of the weekend on this beautiful Friday with a round-up of (mostly) acoustic covers that have recently graced everyone’s favorite video sharing site. We got renditions of some newer hits along with some classic throwback jams, giving you a decent mix of tunage. April Chase returns with a Foster the People cover, Nessa x Krystle x Karol give an impressively harmonious performance of a Tamia classic, Sam Tsui takes on Adele, Esther Lee continues to represent her Faith with a Third Day number, Kaile Goh drops a rock mash up, XOXO goes back in time for a Blaque track, and Meesh switches up a Lil Wayne joint. All in all, there’s a lot of great music here, check em all out!

Snapshot: The Far East Movement Tour Bus

FM Tour Bus

This past summer, the Far East Movement had the incredible opportunity to go on a nation wide tour with Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Keri Hilson & more – and part of the perks to joining such a high profile tour is getting your own mobile accommodations aka… a tour bus. Take one look at that vehicle and you know FM has undeniably “made it”. If having your faces plastered across a 40 foot bus for the purpose of touring with the best selling Hip-Hop acts of 2011 doesn’t scream commercial success… then I don’t know what does.

This photo was taken from their official Facebook albums of the tour. You can view more great pictures here and here.

The Girls That Play Instruments Youtube Cover Round-Up – 9/1/11

Interestingly enough, I noticed that a lot of recent covers were some of our favorite female artists showcasing their talents on their musical instruments of choice. This time around we have Alfa singing a bluesy version of “Grenade”, a faith inspired cover by Esther Lee (aka ThatsEstherLy), Cate Song singing some Jimmy Eat World, Erin Paula on the 6 string for “Skyscraper” and Clara C getting her Weezy on. It’s inspiring to see how talented these girls are, especially since some of these just may be better then the original.

Bruno Mars Features for Lil Wayne on “Mirror” from ‘The Carter IV’

Bonafide hitmaking crooner and song writer Bruno Mars has a guest spot on “Mirror” from Lil Wayne’s just released album Tha Carter IV.  It’s definitely one of the more introspective, conceptual songs on the album. Whether you’re a Weezy fan or not, I’ve yet to hear a track that didn’t benefit from Bruno’s vocals. Interested? We’ve got some streaming and purchase options for ya directly below.

Purchase via iTunes, AmazonMP3

On a semi-related note…  anyone know if Jay Sean is still signed to Cash Money?

The All-Female Youtube Cover Round-Up – 8/13/11

Here we go folks. Just in time for the weekend we have another Youtube cover round-up with today’s common criteria being this is an all female affair. That’s right, there’s nary a Y chromosome in this batch – so what does that present us with? We have the return of Kina Grannis, a pair of songs by Jenny Suk, Cate Song doing Beyonce unplugged, and a couple of collabs by Megan Lee/Shin-B and Nessa Rica/Melissa Polinar. Check them all about below and after the break!

*Note: It’s kind of interesting to see “Uncharted” and “Best Thing I Never Had” have an eerily similar chord progression.
