Latyrx (LB x Lateef) Release the “Hardship Enterprise” Music Video
Lyrics Born & Lateef the Truthspeaker have been known to collectively go under the Latyrx moniker, and that’s the route they chose to travel for the promotion of “Hardship Enterprise” off of Lateef’s recent Firewire album. The duo trade verses over an intense track, with the music video serving more as a psychedelic visualization than a regular lipsync visual. It’s hypnotically trippy.
Lyrics Born Announces “The Lyrics Born Variety Show Season 5: On the Floor!” Mixtape – Due 2/28
L Beezys the world over should be pretty stoked about this announcement. Tsutomu “Tom” Shimura, better known as Lyrics Born, has unveiled his latest project, the 5th installment in the Lyrics Born Variety Show mixtape series. This one is entitled On the Floor and is comprised of two step and boogie remixes of his material. It is scheduled to drop on the second to last day of Feburary, 2012 – the 28th and will ahve some big features on board including Proh of the Far East Movement.
Two Cents: GT’s Top 10 MVs from 2011 (and 10 Honorable Mentions)
2011 was a banner year in the world of Asian-American music. We saw more releases than ever, more artists achieving more mainstream success, and more fans across more ethnic backgrounds recognizing the great music by our artists. But along with more of the good comes more of the bad – with there also being an influx in mediocre music, an increase in hate and bigotry (check Youtube comments) and even more pressure to try and stand out. That’s why I wanted to look back on the past year and choose what I consider to be my top 10 favorite music videos from 2011. Now this doesn’t mean that these are the MVs with the top production values (although this is often the case), but rather it’s a reflection of what I found to be the most well executed, balanced, and entertaining visuals. On the very last page we also have a list of 10 honorable mentions that I thought deserved to be recognized as well.
So without futher ado let’s jump straight into number 10…
10. IAMMEDIC – “Spaceship” (article)
Electronica-Pop group IAMMEDIC took the concept of their song “Spaceship” to the max by injecting a silly Star Trek inspired motif and alien abduction. The video is fun, looks great, and represents the high energy of the audio perfectly. Deep? Not so much, but fun and well executed? Very much so.

Latyrx (Lyrics Born x Lateef) Release the Latryical Madness Volume One Mixtape
Lyrics Born & Lateef the Truthspeaker have teamed up as Latyrx to bring you the Latryical Madness Volume One mixtape. It’s a heavyweight listen with a hopping 23 tracks including a number of guest artists such as Joyo Velarde, The Gift of Gab, Fatboy Slim and many more. If you want to check out the album from the bay area artists, you’ll need to puchase it from LB’s site, the only distributor of the release save for physical copies at his live shows.
Just ‘Cause: Lyrics Born & Adam Mansbach Read “Go the F**k To Sleep”
Earlier this year, an alternative book known as Go the F**k To Sleep by Adam Mansbach became something of a pop-cultural phenomenon. Dubbed as “a children’s book for adults“, the facetious narrative injects humor with a youthful styling to create something you’ve likely never seen or heard before. Recently, Lyrics Born joined author Adam Mansbach for a live reading of the story, complete with uncut commentary. LB is already well known for his voice work, so as random as this seems, it’s really not that far of a stretch for the Bay-area musician.
Why? Just ‘Cause.
Lyrics Born Features on Headnodic’s “Moving On Up”
Bay Area native Lyrics Born has a feature spot on Headnodic’s latest track “Moving On Up” released in late June with the music video released earlier this week. It’s kind of a trippy song and visual but a somewhat refreshing stylistic flip compared to all the music we hear on the radio. If you can appreciate a little alternative Hip-Hop, give this one a listen. L Beezy closes out the track.

Peep the latest visuals from Deacon artist Lyrics Born for his track “Coulda Woulda Shoulda” off his As U Were album. You can expect heavily stylized visuals to match the funky texture of the track. I’ll be sure to update later with my thoughts!

[update] It’s always refreshing to see artists have fun with their videos. The VCR-esque retro feel of this MV really sets it apart and highlights the throwback feel of the song. The super-imposed animated face on LB is a hilarious touch. L. Beezy rarely makes boring videos and this is no different.

Lyrics Born Releases the As U Were Album
It’s finally here. LB’s latest album, As U Were, featuring the single “Lies x 3″ has officially dropped. It’s packed full of 17 tracks with a lot of features including his wife Joyo Velarde. One thing I’ve noticed is that Born likes to switch up the sound on every album and it seems like this is still the case. He never stops trying to expand as an artist and I can respect that. This is his first official album release since 2008′s Everywhere At Once.

Lyrics Born Drops the “Lies x 3″ MV
This just may one of the slickest stylized MV production this year. Lyrics Born makes his video comeback for the single “Lies x 3“. It’s done in the style of 70′s Japanese exploitation film, detailing a girl creepin behind her man’s back. This must of been one hell of a video to edit in post production but it makes creative use of a limited set. Gotta love the resourcefulness and creativity. Other artists take note! The single is off his upcoming album As U Were set to drop next week.
Lookin’ Back: Complex Mag Features “8 Pioneers In Asian-American Hip-Hop”
In lieu of the historical success by the Far East Movement with their single “Like a G6″ and recently released album, Complex has put together a little feature article on who they consider 8 Pioneers in Asian-American Hip-Hop. In no way is this to be considered a definitive list, but it’s a great read on some of the names and faces who have come before and have contributed to the genre in some way, shape, or form. The artists featured are Fresh Kid Ice, Lin Que, Lyrics Born, Mountain Brothers, Mike Shinoda, Jin, Southstar, Apl.de.Ap. There have definitely been other artists across multiple genres and ethnicities that have inspired FM, but it’s always good to look back and see who have come before.
