10 Live Performances for Your Wednesday Night

There’s something about a live atmosphere that is hard to match. True, you’re almost certainly listening to a technically inferior version of your favorite songs due to the live nature and lack of studio polish, but there is an energy present that makes it all so dynamic and memorable. Of course, this is much more amplified when this is done before an audience, which most of these clips are – but there are a few in here that are simple “living room” covers and are still very much enjoyable.

Run River North – “Growing Up”
*Note, I saw them live last night, and they are fantastic. Definitely try to catch them if they are ever in your town.

Lookin’ Back: Revisiting 2013′s Biggest Moments in a-Tunes

This year has been a very full one, with lots of artists and music covered. Music videos, singles, albums, and side projects have come and gone and we are left looking back the trends and biggest moments of 2013. This summary of the year doesn’t really focus on individual artists and their day to day activities, but instead looks at some of the overarching trends and notable milestones for Asian-American music as a whole.

So in no particular order:

  • In 2013, we started to exist more to Big Business.

Although there is still a long battle ahead of us, corporations are starting to recognize the Asian-American community and it’s artists – with more song placements and even appearances by some of our artists in print and visual advertisements.

The year started off with a crack, with Psy riding the success of his mega hit, “Gangnam Style”, by appearing in a Wonderful Pistachios ad campaign that debuted during the Superbowl.

The year also featured commercial appearances by Jessica Sanchez, Mike Song, KRNFX, Rino Nakasone, Meeghan Henry, Far East Movement, Knewdles, Steve Aoki and Jasmine Villegas. Let’s hope this trend continues!

The Mid-week Music Video Mini-Reviews Youtube Round-Up – 12/26/13

We hope everyone is having a great holiday season! That being said, we didn’t want to leave you without the weekly music video review round-up, so I’ll keep this short. Enjoy the time with loved ones and maybe some of these music videos can add some A/V entertainment into the mix!

Lions Ambition – “Believe”
LA is one of those groups we wish we could see and hear from more. But what they don’t have in quantity they seem to be making up for in quality. Walking Dead meets alternative rap/rock? I can dig it. Sure, it’s a little campy, but it’s fitting if you ask me.

Adrian Per & AR|2 – “The Heist”
Adrian Per shows his diverse musical talents with his DJ/EDM group, AR|2. As a listen, it’s a pretty polished track with some catchy bass synth lines. As a music video, it’s more of an an excuse to watch attractive but impractically scantily clad models somehow pull off a number of crimes.

Jessi Malay – “Here I Am”
Jessi goes in a more personal route for her latest single, opting to reflect on her career path and it’s ups and downs. For those that aren’t as familiar with her singing trajectory, this offers some insight to her musical past. The disco ball scenes seem a bit self-indulgent but otherwise I can appreciate this video.

The Mid-week Music Video Mini-Reviews Youtube Round-Up – 11/13/13

Wow! It was another big week for music videos as we have 13 to share with you today. And better yet, it was a fairly strong showing overall with a number of very solid visual releases to accompany your music. It would behoove you to take a gander and make your way through this list, there are some great videos to find, for sure.

HeeSun Lee x MC Jin – “I Break Stereotypes”
HeeSun & Jin on the same track? Let’s just say I came in with high hopes. And well, let’s just say I did not walk away disappointed. And I haven’t heard Jin sound this hungry since he was on 106 & Park! Two MCs that push each other to kill it on one track? I’m on board with that. Well played, this was our biggest pleasant surprise of the week.

Andrew Huang – “The Coldest Darkness”
Whoa. This just may be the eeriest video Andrew Huang has ever dropped. I’m most impressed in how effective his use of the simple color scheme. His upcoming album shares the title of this track, and this is a positive indicator of things to come.

Jazmin – “You”
All I have to say is it’s about time for this sisterly quartet to start making some big moves. It’s been a number of years since we first heard about the group but they seemed to fall out of the spotlight for a while. Well, this ain’t a bad way to step back into it. “You” is off their just released 90′s Baby EP.

The a-Tunes Meta Covers Youtube Round-Up – 8/26/13

So what do we mean when we say a-Tunes Meta Covers? These are songs and videos of a-Tunes artists covering other a-Tunes artists. In other words, it’s a double dip. It’s an ode to the community, a tip of the hat to other artists in the scene. It’s artists showing love to other like-minded artists, from both now and the past… and we respect that. So enjoy this round-up, it’s been a while since we’ve gone meta! A few artist in particular absolutely killllled their covers.

KRNFX Covers “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars

Michelle Martinez Covers “Do You Miss Me?” By Jocelyn Enriquez

Megan Lee Mashes Up “Gentleman x Gangnam Style” by Psy

Passport: Megan Lee Features on “Oppa” by Kim Tae Woo

About a month ago, we announced that Megan Lee had officially signed with Kim Tae Woo’s (of KPOP’s g.o.d. fame) label, Soulshop Entertainment. One such project to come out of that partnership is her feature on Kim Tae Woo’s single, “오빠 (Oppa)”. A music video was recently released for the song, and though it’s a bit on the low-budget side, it’s a silly and fun watch to promote a breezy and laid-back tune.

Get the song on iTunes.

Passport: Megan Lee Signs with Soulshop Entertainment in Korea

Huge news for the teenage Youtube singer, Megan Lee. After spending much of the past couple years in South Korea, away from her home in Southern California, it has been announced that she has officially signed with Soulshop Entertainment. The label is headed by Kim Tae Woo, the former lead vocal to the KPOP group G.O.D. Megan has been hard at work in trying to breakthrough over there, and this is a huge step in the right direction for her. Congratulations, Megan!
