DUKE Shows You a New “Galaxy”

It’s been ages since we heard from Schoolboy DUKE, so the arrival of “Galaxy” is a welcome development. As is his style, the song is a pop friendly jam for which he’s provided a typogaphy/animation (by Jay Chow) video. It’s upbeat, it’s fun, it’s catchy – sounds like about right for an early Summer jam. Let’s hope the wait isn’t as long until his next release.

The Youtube Rap Remix Round-Up – 10/26/11

Mid-week hump… why don’t we have another Youtube round-up! Today’s theme is “rap remix”, so all of the following are beats that our rappers decided to flip and use for their own purposes. Nothing wrong with that, just as long as you recognize it’s not a completely organic offering. The first two in our collection are placed as such because they have, by far, the best production values among the group. Thai’s in particular, is up to 454′s usual impeccable visual standards. But don’t sleep on Miss TLu of On Fire, the girl shows promise. The rest of the gang include a collab by Toestah & Jen Chung, LA’s 3Strykes representing too, Lil Crazed with a little spin-off of MGK, DUKE keeping things fun with a LMFAO joint and Verse rounding out the pack. Lot’s of Jay-Z x Kanye beats in here, I guess they are a crowd favorite.

Schoolboy DUKE Shares “Anywhere”

Eclectic rapper Schoolboy Duke went in a different direction with his latest song, “Anywhere”. The track is an uplifting track of encouragement, making the most of the inspirational hook. DUKE is showing some versatility as he jumps from genre to genre, perhaps it’s time he release a proper collection of songs in the form of an EP or LP to take the next step in his artistry.

A quick inspirational track I did for those who are in need of some inspiration..this one’s for you. Keep fighting ya’ll. Stick with it. Don’t ever give up.

I’m right there with y’all.

And for the haters that say that my music got no content. Here you go.

DUKE Presents “One Love (I Love You)”

“One Love (I Love You)” marks the return of the artist known as Schoolboy DUKE. He stays true to his radio-friendly style, releasing a song that bends genres as is his status quo. You get a little bit of rap, a little bit of singing, a little bit of pop and a little bit of electronica; all mixed into one. Take a listen and feel free to follow along with the lyrics below.

[New Song] Schoolboy DUKE – “Take You Now”

Eclectic artist Schoolboy DUKE never ceases to amaze me with his versatility and willingness to tackle various genres, for better or worse. In this case it’s definitely for the former as the recent college grad leaves the raps behind (for the most part) and jumps into a Pop/Rock song with refreshing aplomb. This has mass-appeal written all over it and could fit right in on the tracklist to a teen movie (though we could do without the producer’s tags in the track). Congrats to DUKE on graduating and on the new track!

[Snippet] Duke – “Come Back Home”

Schoolboy DUKE’s got a preview out of an upcoming track called “Come Back Home”. Even though we can only hear about a minute of it, I think it’s got great potential. In fact, if it ends up as strong as it starts then this could be one of my favorite drops from DUKE – though only time will tell. Hopefully this isn’t another joint to fall by the wayside and actually sees the light of day of completion.

Johnnyphlo x Schoolboy DUKE Remix “Officially Missing You” [Free DL]

Tamia’s “Officially Missing You” is definitely a classic, so switching it up in any way can be a risky move. Johnnyphlo and Schoolboy decided to do just that and thankfully their gamble paid off as they’ve kept enough intact from the original to pay it homage while making it the track completely their own. The kinetic typography video helps too… can’t be mad at that. Get the song via the bandcamp widget below for free.

Schoolboy DUKE Releases New Single – “She Kills Me”

One of DUKE‘s biggest strengths is his willingness to cross genres and make music that reflects him, regardless of labels. This new track called “She Kills Me” is the perfect example, where he actually sings most of it. It almost sounds like he was in a boy band in a prior life. This has cross appeal written all over it, but I supposed that’s kind of what Schoolboy does best. Hip-hop purists will scoff at this but I think anyone with an open mind and an appreciation for catchy tunes will find this to be enjoyable. My only qualm is that I wished the guy would quit jacking beats so we don’t have to hear all those tags in the middle.

Critic’s Corner: Decipher – The Effect

It’s been years since we’ve seen a full-length LP from Philadelphia rapper Decipher. Sure, we’ve seen a couple mixtapes from him along with a plethora of feature spots on other artists’ songs but those aren’t enough to truly gauge how an artist has evolved over time compared to an actual, conceptualized album. But this changed at the top of 2011, when Decipher dropped his long awaited return, The Effect. The MUzO artist did a good job of building anticipation for the album, but does it live up to the hype? We’re gonna find out.

Schoolboy DUKE x Decipher Release “Catch Up” [Free DL]

Here’s a new collaboration joint from Schoolboy DUKE and Decipher called “Catch Up”. It looks like DUKE wanted to switch things up and try something new, dropping a track unlike anything we’ve heard from him before. He drops his trademark sung hooks and pop-friendly raps and trades it for something a little grimier and darker. Only problem is that it came off unconvincing and put him out of his element. Decipher was the highlight of the track but I’m not sure even he completely salvaged this misfire. The song ain’t bad per se, just awkward; but that’s just my opinion. If you’re feeling it then grab it now cause it’s a free DL.
