Girls Generation Reportedly Scheduled to Appear on Live! with Kelly & the Late Show with David Letterman

Well I’ll be. It would seem that the WGs aren’t the only Korean import girl group to start making a promotional push on national television here in the states. Reports have been coming in that the cheer-leading squad Pop group, Girls Generation aka 소녀시대 aka SNSD aka how-many-of-them-are-there? are scheduled to appear on two national television talk shows, Live! with Kelly and the Late Show with David Letterman. An interesting approach, considering they are tackling both daytime and late night TV. It remains to see how they will be fare, likely with their Teddy Riley produced single, “The Boys“.

You can read more about it over at AJ.

Japan’s Jin Akanishi to Debut in the US with ‘The Takeover’ & Single w/ Jason Derulo

If you follow J-Pop, you may be familiar with an artist by the name of Jin Akanishi, formerly of the popular group KAT-TUN. Well, he’s been successful after branching out on his own and it looks like he has set his eyes on the US market with the release of an album and single. The former is called The Takeover (ambitious ain’t it?) and the latter is called “Test Drive” and will feature hit R&B artist Jason Derulo. Does Akanishi have what it takes to break into the western industry? We don’t know but we’re excited to find out!

KPOP Star Taeyang Goes International with the English MV for “I’ll Be There”

Taeyang, whose material is no stranger to many Asian-American artists in the states, seems to have international cross-over status in his sights and has released a new track in both Korean & English entitled “I’ll Be There” off his Solar International Album. You can see the official MV below, complete with “Thriller”-esque visuals and dance. What do you guys think? I’m sure the KPOP fans will love it but what about everyone else?

Wheesung Reveals More Details About US Debut

You may recall the news that Wheesung was planning on entering the US market, well a couple months later he’s revealed a few more details and OMGKPOP’s got the scoop:

On Sunday’s airing of Pops in Seoul’s “In the Booth With” segment, the loveable VJ Isak asked Wheesung about his upcoming US Debut. Check out what he had to say about recording his English debut album, Ne-Yo, and Michael Jackson.

On “In the Booth With,” VJ Isak interviewed Wheessung and asked him about his upcoming debut in the US. This is what he had to say…

Isak: I heard that you are bringing your music to the US, next year!”

Wheesung: “Yes! It’s an opportunity that just fell from the sky. The opportunity really came down from the heavens. I was very lucky. They called me first! A team that was planning a project wanted to invite an Asian singer to the US.  They wanted me to be their first singer. So I told them that I couldn’t speak English, and that I was old…”

Isak: What does age have to do with it?!

“…So I told them to think it over again and call me. They called me and said they thought it was fine and I said I would do it and thanked them.  That’s what happened. I think I was very lucky. I’m very happy that I was so lucky”

Isak: Tell us about the story about you and Michael Jackson.

“I’m working with Ne-Yo and another producer on a song that was originally written for Michael Jackson.”

Isak: Wow, the song you will be recording? You’ll be in the US and singing in front of recognized R&B stars a
nd will be recording music with them. Do you feel the weight on your shoulders?

“At first I thought it would be stressful but actually it wasn’t that hard, it’s strange. It’s more challenging for me to sing in Korea! But I’m starting something totally different so I think of it as a new chapter in my life.” interviewed Wheesung earlier this year he said he had no plans to enter the US market, but with these preparations and such, it shows how quickly ones plans can change. Definitely wishing the best of luck to Wheesung on his upcoming US debut! Please continue to visit OMGKPOP for more news regarding Wheesung’s crossover.

When OMGKPOP

Honestly I’m still a bit skeptical… not of Wheesung’s talent but just of the execution of the whole project. Thankfully Ne-Yo is an amazing producer so hopefully he’ll come through on that end. I’m hoping for the best because questionable fashion choices aside, Wheesung is one of the most talented r&b singers in Korea.

Crown J Releases Preview of “I’m Good” ft Young Dro

We reported earlier this year that Crown J had plans to break into the US industry and it looks like he’s another step closer to his official debut with the US version of his single “I’m Good”. What we’ve now learned is the Korean MC has enlisted the help of Young Dro to feature on the track, you can check the preview teaser below.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original Korean single, and that hasn’t changed with this US version. While the beat’s catchy Crown J comes off as a bit cheesy and unauthentic. But hey that’s just me. Do you think he has what it takes? Or will this be another instance of a single that gets very mild attention before vanishing into obscurity? *cough* Se7en *cough*

In all seriousness though, we wish him the best.

Wheesung to Enter the US Market

AllKPop reported this morning that Korean R&B star Wheesung is in plans to debut here in the states, linking up with Darkchild, the producer behind Se7en’s single ‘Girls’. While I’m excited for Wheesung because I’m a big fan I wonder if his result will be any better than Se7en’s. If Wheesung gets a c-level instrumental similar to Se7en’s, it doesnt matter who the producer is. Hopefully this will all amount to more than a plug as the new joint of the day on BET’s 106 & Park.

Also, he’s gotta have a little chat with his stylist to make sure his promo photos don’t end up like this:

… Cause I don’t think the US is ready for that. Shoot I don’t think Korea should have been ready for that.

YENN debuts in the US

Vietnamese Pop sensation Da Nhat Yen, now known as YENN, has just released her debut US single ‘So Good To Be Wrong’. The track is now available on iTunes. It’s a fairly catchy pop single. Can’t say I love it but I think it could grow on me.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about her but she’s supposedly a big deal overseas in Vietnam so it will be interesting to see how she fares along with all the other international stars attempting to cross over this year.

Here’s a clip of her recording the single:

Let’s hope the yellow people music movement continues!

The Korea Herald Op-Ed on Korean/US Crossovers

The Korea Herald had an interesting piece about the flock of KPOP singers attempting to break through the US market. It’s a great, short read and I’ll quote the entire article after the break just in case the page is ever removed.

Although nothing is really shocking about what’s written, it poses some good questions and summarizes the current pop culture climate and obstacles many of these singers are facing.

The Wonder Girls release US MV for ‘Nobody’

It’s pretty much a rehash of the original korean version with a combination of dubs, reedits, and reshooting. Actually it’s kind of interesting because you can tell Yoobin (the rapper) has gained a little bit of weight in the newly shot scenes.

The song overall loses a little bit of it’s charm in that it seems less natural but it’s still as catch as every.

Various KPOP blogs are following their US debut more closely so be sure to check with them if you want ot know more.

Wonder Girls to release ‘Nobody’ on iTunes

It should be available tomorrow, 06.26.09. Not much else to say. Hope it comes out well although I have to admit after hearing this song nearly non stop for the past 9 months my enthusiasm has some what dwindled.

Can the WG have Jonas fans singing “I want nobody (nobody) but you!”?
