Worst Ever: Kim Jung Ah’s glory note

So we haven’t had a Worst Ever feature in a while and I thought this would be a fitting one.

Now we all know that being a pop star doesnt necessarily require the best vocal talent. It’s really all about commercial appeal and marketability. Singing talent is a nice to have but definitely not an absolute requirement. So it’s really no surprise when a KPOP group isnt comprised of the strongest singers ever. Typically a combination of studio magic, lip syncing, back up singers, and just plain knowing your limits are enough to help even the most mediocre stars get by.

Before I continue let me disclaim that I actually enjoy the KPOP girl group Afterschool. Well, to a degree. I understand their place in the market and have come to appreciate their manufactured but entertaining music. I thought ‘Ah’ wasn’t too bad and better yet I do like ‘Diva’. It’s a catchy, harmless song… at least until the “glory note” near the end.

If you listen around the 2:15 mark of the following video you hear Kim Jung Ah’s bridge solo come up. She has a fairly decent voice but she’s definitely no diva herself. And this segment really exposes that. I mean what note is that at 2:30? But you know what, I guess its passable. It may be kind of awkward but at least it doesn’t hurt.

But then I saw the live performances… and you know what? She doesn’t even get close to the already awkward studio version. It’s just a really off key note… that she doesn’t even sustain as she takes two breathers, each time coming back to that weird note.

She may have the guts to try it live, but I tell you there is no glory in that note.

  1. Diva was better then “Ah”, but O.o that note was note cute. I cant believe it goes on after she does the weird note. Gross! I think they’re lucky to have Brave Brothers produce their tracks so far.

  2. hehe I didn’t say she’s the worst singer, but that note is quite bad. In fact I said “She has a fairly decent voice”

but even in the studio version, that note is pretty bad.

its cool you’re a fan, i enjoy their music too.. but i’m just calling it as i hear it.

  3. Okay, I respect your opinion.

So by saying she has a fairly decent voice, do you judge that by how she sings or her actual voice? Because if it’s her voice that you’re judging from, your standards are quite surprising. I’m just curious. And if I may ask also, in what way is the note itself weird?

  4. At the end of the day I’m saying she’s an alright singer but not a fantastic one.

And the note just wasn’t pretty to me haha. It was just too strained.

  5. well you know what bitch i don’t give a fuck. kim jung ah is the best singer in my mind. nothing, not even a bad note will change that. she has just started her career, everyone has to start somewhere!a bad not is the least of my worries for her. I think you’re a bitch no matter if you think her voice is ok, still. You should think its the best. I’m just stating my opinion eh?

  6. this was posted ages ago but im commenting anyway lol.
The notes not that bad, ive heard other singers in kpop sing alot worse, especially live, man…some korean singers can’t sing live for crap…
In all honesty it needs more reverb for her solo, they’ve made her sound like it’s a fresh untouched solo straight from the studio, doesn’t really flow with the song as much as it should.
Anyway stop hating on her! lol:D

    1. hahaha i just found it weird that she sounds decent throughout the rest of the song but consistently missed that note.

just made it that much more of a shame.. ya know?

      1. yea true she does struggle a fair bit, now she barely sings it live lol, she has lower voices then the rest of the members so…its understandable
i think thats also a reason why they put raina in…but that’s just me 😛 Lol

  7. hahaha i think atunes handled that one comment that called him/her out as a bitch calmly wahahahah
but seriously i think its up to the ears and personal opinion of the listeners and i’m just a new fan of AS… and I never think that solo part of Jung Ah is out of tune at all or note whatever i dont have a music degree }:P… anyways however weird this sounds i consider that solo part as the climax of the song and i liked it… SEE IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU HEAR NOT WHAT ATUNE OR WHOEVER HEARS… HAHAHAHAH

    After School! hwaiting }:3

  8. I never thought that note was out of tune. i think it was just the way it was supposed to sound. jung ah’s voice when it gets higher get’s sort of squeaky-er so maybe that’s why you think it sounds kind of bad.

  9. there’s a video on youtube where she said it’s harder to sing because of her husky voice. but she tries and that’s what matters. she’s got a great voice and is just as good as her members in After School.

  10. She the main vocals of the group for a reason
her voice may not sound like usual bright happy high voices of other girls but she’s definitely got a good voice.
It’s husky and unique- and beautiful
She’s probably one of the worst choices you could have picked for this

    1. the bottom line is, she can’t consistently hit the big notes live. and when she’s off she’s terrible.

i’d say she’s an above average singer but not a great one.

  11. I know this post was a long time ago but I just had to say that Jung-Ah’s high note in the kor ver of diva sounds A WHOLE LOT better when the high note was given to Raina in the jap. ver.

And to add, Jung-Ah tried to improve her voice when singing high notes.. as seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAoW9HYOYCM… she didnt break the note into two, now its a beautiful complete note (:
