Continuing his Donation Drive Month Campaign, Adam WarRock drops another double single in the form of “Commedia Dell’Arte”/”The Best of Me”. He switches gears a little bit and gets real tangible, relaying his various experiences in the music industry and trying to make it in that career lane. Both tracks are a little more personal than some of his other work but it makes me appreciate it that much more. Find out how you can contribute a donation & also DL the song here.
Beats used:
Braille “Get Well Soon”
Raashan Ahmad & Thes One “Doin It”
Liner Notes:
As we soldier on with Weekly Singles for Donation Drive Month, this week’s track is a bit more serious, a bit more heady. I wanted to make a track that said something about life as an indie musician, and I guess I have some pent up bitterness about the whole thing, that came out obviously on this track.
I remember talking to a friend who’s become very successful in the world of freelance creative art, and he told me that to succeed, you have to be ready to “eat shit for a year straight,” and if you can survive that, you have a slight chance of making it. I didn’t understand what he meant until the first time I sat in front of 6-8 people showing up for a concert, feeling a little salty about it. I remembered his advice, and then reveled in it, realizing these were part of paying dues. I honestly had one of my best shows that night. You can’t measure success that way, you have to be willing to do your best even if it’s for a couple people, even if it’s not how you imagined it would be. This is the business you choose, and you do it for the love.
I’ve been lucky to have a pretty quick public rise, but make no mistake that I’ve been making music for almost eleven years of my life. At a time in college in the early 2000s, I was making MORE music than I do now (if you can believe it), I was performing on an almost weekly basis, I was battling, freestyling in ciphers, hitting up local spots and paying dues. I just had no intentions of making a living doing it. Now, things are different, and I’m thankful to everyone that supports me, I’m thankful for all the breaks that I’ve gotten, and I’m thankful to anyone who shows up at a show, or who bothers to listen to a song. Even that person who said my lyrics were like “bad high school poetry.” At least he or she took the time to listen to it. It’s a tough business, and people who think it’s all fun and games have no idea what they’re talking about. This track hopefully explains some of that.
“The Best Of Me” was a song that just came about as the b-side of “Commedia Dell’Arte.” It made sense as the other side of the rough/aggressive emcee, the business side. There’s some personal shit in there that’s very private, stuff I probably wouldn’t talk about with many people, but somehow putting it in a song doesn’t bother me at all. I like to be honest in the music I make, and I hope people can appreciate it without it seeming too navel gazing or emo.
