The Freshman: Goni – “To Me”

It’s only the third day of February, how about a new Freshmen feature? If you need a reminder – this is where we spotlight artists who haven’t quite developed a large following yet, and are still working on establishing themselves. Remember it’s important that you, the readers, vote either thumbs up or thumbs down on these posts because this will help us decide which of these artists can graduate from The Freshmen and be a part of the regular rotation of a-Tunes Music News.

Now this isn’t exactly the first time we’ve heard from Goni; he’s graced our website once before by merit of jumping on a remix track with Johnnyphlo last fall. But the NY/NJ artist has continued to branch out on his own under the tutelage of his MUzO counterparts. “To You” is the bi-lingual rapper’s music video debut, a memorable milestone in any artists career. The song utilizes a recognizable sample perhaps best known for it’s use in Kill Bill. When all is said and done, you can see both the areas of promise and areas that could use some polish – but which side of him do you ultimately see prevailing?

This is a democratic process, so exercise your right to vote by clicking thumbs up or thumbs down. With enough positive votes outweighing the negative, you’ll see and hear more from Goni on our site. On the flip side, a lack of interest and we’ll have to keep going without the new rapper. So, what’ll it be?

Well Erika has proclaimed it to be one of her favorite cuts from the project and has put together a kinetic typography lyric video to help promote it. It’s not an official music video, but it’ll have to do for now!

D-Pryde Featured in XXL (February/March)

D-Pryde has found himself gracing the pages of the national Hip-Hop magazine publication, XXL. But this time, the young MC has been given the upgrade treatment, where he’s progressed from the short blurb of last time to a small article in Show & Prove. He posted the above image on various social networks with the following statement:

From being in a tiny section of “The Break”, to having my own article for the “Show & Prove” section in XXL Magazine. Progression will always be key. Thank you to everybody who has lifted me up to here, even the people who’ve never believed. I don’t live in forgiveness but I live in acceptance.

I’m here because of my talent of course, and I do care about myself. But at the end of the day my people, my fans, and my family brought me here and I’ll never lose way of that…This means more to me than you think. It’s not the end though.

I might not have much money to spend around but I have a pack of misunderstood kids I call fans, my family, my team, and my girl. S’all I need.

Thank you…I’m way too happy right now.

Posted in front of SONNY’S! I’m so Brampton it’s a DAMN SHAME!

NEXT UP, THE COVER!

The kid is makings moves, and I respect that. Let’s hope he does make it on to the cover!

Passport: Brian Joo x Flowsix Release MV for “Let This Die”

Two artists from the states have teamed up for a new pop single called “Let This Die”. The song is off of Brian’s latest EP, Reborn Part 1. Flowsik (of Aziatix) provides the guest rap vocals to make what is ultimately a catchy Pop/R&B tune. I could do without the autotune on Flow’s parts though – and it’s a shame he’s a no show in the video. Either way, check out the visuals below.

The International Cover/Remix Round-Up 2/2/12

Well earlier today, Kelly Ripa tweeted a photoof her and the girls on the set of her daytime talk show. It remains to be seen what, if any lasting impact the group will have on the music scene, but it must have been an exciting past 24 hours for them!

Lyricks Features for G2 on “It’s My Thing”

Lyricks decided to take things in a multi-lingual route with this new collab with Korean-speaking G2.  They each take two verses a piece with G taking providing the bi-lingual raps on a track called “It’s My Thing” – with a music video to boot. The video is a mildly entertaining watch, though the song itself is the stronger of the two mediums.
