Bambu interview w/ mtvU

Bambu has a new interview w/ mtvU so make sure you see what’s up when you get a chance. Also, you can peep it after the jump if you don’t feel like going to mTVu’s website.

Find out what’s up with Bambu when he answers our burning questions in this week’s Hot Seat.

1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
Bambu: I have so many “blatant racism” stories on the road that it would take up this whole interview (laughs)! So, let’s just go with the Minnesota show that I did inside of a church (don’t ask), where my hypeman at the time, Faniks, decided to liven up the crowd by hanging off the giant cross — and almost knocking the entire 10-foot piece off the stage. The audience was not amused.

2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
Bambu: I would love any class dealing with indigenous cultures and their martial arts. You can discover a lot about a people through the history of their martial arts.

3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Bambu: In order: Oakland because of the culture, Seattle because of the people and New York because of the landscape. BUT, Los Angeles is home, so my favorite airplane ride is always that one that puts me into smog-city.

4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
Bambu: “Live your life knowing how you want to be remembered in death — don’t be an a******.” – Earl White (my adopted Dad told me this when I turned 20) This is a quote that I do everything in life trying to remember. I always say it, I never know when my number’s up, so I need to make sure that while I’m alive that I’m making sure the memory of me is one that will bring pride to my family, friends and my people. I just want to help make an impact toward social change and make sure my family is safe and healthy. That’s how I want to be remembered.

5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
Bambu: Right now it’s a bunch of beats from Keelay & Zaire, Sabzi (Blue Scholars), Steez, Rhettmatic (Beat Junkies), MTK, DJ Phatrick, Johnny Five and CZA. Oh, and I just got the new Blue Scholars EP, “Oof!” — loving that right now!

6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.
Bambu: I re-read the late Tookie Williams’ “Blue Rage, Black Redemption.” At the moment, the television show I’m addicted to is “Eastbound & Down” on HBO. Hilarious!!!

7. What’s the first concert you ever saw – how was it?
Bambu: The first performance I remember seeing was Ellay Khule of Project Blowed at a place called Glam Slam here in Los Angeles. I was 13, and I couldn’t believe that the crowd was doing all the call and response chants! From then on, I was at Unity every time Bigga B threw one! Rest In Peace B — thanks for always letting me in with no ID. You changed my life.

8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Bambu: My iPod, Macbook Pro and my Blackberry — and as a given, there’s no way I could hit the road without my ace, DJ Phatrick!

9. Who are your major musical influences?
Bambu: Everyday life inspires me to write. Stories about everyday life in working-class Los Angeles and struggling people around the word. There’s no rapper out that could match that when it comes to motivating me to write and create music.

10. Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
Bambu: It’s not good enough to know that things could be better — do something to make it better.
