Drake is one of those artists that knows how to blend genres and constantly switch things up to keep it fresh. There’s an underlying musicality to much of his work, so it shouldn’t be any surprise that although he’s mostly known as a rapper, a lot of artists from other genres like to put their own spin on his work.
It’s been quite some time (2 years!) since we’ve had a Showdown feature. At this point, I’m sure many of you may need a reminder as to what this is all about – it’s where we have a little friendly comparison of artists that cover/remix the same songs and then vote for the one we think pulled it off better. Pretty simple right?
“Hotline Bling” took the pop culture world by storm a couple weeks ago, and there seems to be a new cover video out nearly every day. Here are a few of the ones done by the Asian-American artists we follow.
So, which of the above covers struck your fancy? Was it one of the smooth R&B remakes by Z. Woods or Paul Kim? Perhaps the minimalist, acoustic renditions by JRA or Joseph Vincent resonated with you? How about the duet by Jason Chen & Marie Digby? And of course, we can’t forget about the indie-folk-pop statement made by Yuna… They all did a great job but our only gripe is the fact that not a single one of them chose to do their own special dance moves.
Cast your vote by texting your favorite artist’s name to 1-800-aTunes1 – just kidding don’t do that, we don’t have an SMS hotline (bling) but you can share your opinion via the voting widget below.
