I’ve long been a fan of the multi-cultural singer, Crystal Kay, since I first heard her collaborations with the awesome M-flo. But since I don’t follow JPOP too diligently, I haven’t really kept tabs on the singer and monitored her as closely in recent years. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the pop artist has decided to give it a go here in the States, and her debut single and video is the following: “Busy Doing Nothing”.
So how does her debut hold up? Well, it’s catchy with a touch of the retro vibe that is prevalent in a lot of today’s pop music. Part of her appeal has always been her charm, and that is present in the song and video but overall I’m not sure this is the homerun we’d all like it to be. We all know how difficult it can be to cross over into the US market for any Asian artists not named Psy, so let’s hope she’s only dipping her toe in the water with this one and that there is much more to come.
I have to agree. While Crystal is one of few Japanese artists I follow regularly, this kind of fell flat with me. It was catchy, but lacked her sparkle that I usually here on her Japanese-released tracks. But, I still hope she manages to garner attention and that this leads to further things here in the States.
