You can chalk it up to nostalgia, but when I found out Southstar was dropping a verse on Jargon‘s latest track, “Shut It Down” (also featuring J. Reyez), I couldn’t help but be intrigued. It’s been about a decade since South tasted brief mainstream success as a part of the duo, Smilez & Southstar, and needless to says a lot of time has passed. I know he’s had a few drops here and there over the years, but this just may be his most prominent appearance in quite some time. I guess it just took 10 years for the game to catch up with more Asian-American rappers in the scene.
To be honest, I like the song, not love it. Production is enjoyable and each MC does his thing though no parts in particular are especially memorable. But it’s a fair listen and hearing/seeing South on the track is a welcome reminder of the days of yesteryear.
