Honestly, at this point it was only a matter of time. Rumors of plans for Korea’s superstar girl group, 2NE1, to enter the US market have been swirling around for a couple years now – with their music being featured in Western TV shows and ad campaigns; and their leader, CL, collaborating with Skrillex. But now we know with a little bit more certainty that at least CL will be stepping up to the plate, as she has recently signed on with Scooter Bruan to help orchestrate her US debut in 2015. The rapper, singer, fashionista has a long road ahead of her, especially if she doesn’t want to be another North American one-hit-wonder akin to her labelmate, Psy, but I think she’s better equipped than most who have tried to make the journey from Asia into this market.
And she’s not content with just being on the music charts… she’s going for something more holistic and bigger. She told Billboard:
“I want to represent Asian women,” she added. “I want to break that typical Asian female stereotype. There’s this standard where they’re all calm. I want to break that. I want to tell the world that there are some badass Asian female girls.”
I gotta say, I’m somewhat optimistic about her chances. Scooter ain’t a dumb man, so here’s to hoping he knows exactly what he’s doing to help make this a success for CL.
